Chapter 13:
The aftermath
Warmth surrounded Selene as she began to wake, her mind hazy as the sweet bliss that was sleep tried to maintain its hold on her. Soon her senses came back to her and she became aware of the things around her. The soft, warm, sheets that clung to her as she snuggled down deep into the dark depths of the bed, the bright sunlight that shone in through the window of the room trying to free her from the tight grip sleep had on her, and the sound of light breathing as it passed through the owners lips and tickled her ear. She groaned lightly in irritation at the light that shinned upon her from the window and pulled the covers of the bed over her head as she snuggled closer to the living pillow whose breath was tickling her ear and had a lazy arm draped around her waist. Her eyes shot open, all thoughts of sleep forgotten, and stared in front of her wide before she screamed.
The sound of the mortal’s screams rang throughout the palace like a bell in a tower. No one thought nothing of it for Lilith had already spread the word that the king had placed the sleeping mortal in his bed without the violet eyed girl’s knowledge and had taken bets throughout the royal abode as to the girl’s reaction. The demoness smirked from her seat behind the king’s desk as Dante looked at her in concern. The duchess muttered a simple “I win” before returning to the work the two had previously been engaged in.
The scream was not Selene’s only reaction to the sight of the half dressed king beside her. As she screamed, she flipped the covers from her and crawled backwards on the mattress until she reached the edge and fell to the carpeted floor below. Helios, barely startled by the young woman’s screams, slowly opened his eyes and, careful not to irritate his burns, sat up on the bed staring with an arched brow as Selene fell over the edge of the bed and to the floor.
“May I ask why you decided to, literally, jump out of bed so early in the morning?” Helios asked.
Selene’s form appeared from the floor, her hair incredibly disheveled and tangled from the night of sleep and her little episode. She stayed kneeled next to the bed, wincing in surprise when it hurt in certain areas on her legs, and glared at the king.
“Why were we in the same bed together?” she demanded.
He smiled at her from where he sat. “You looked very cold and uncomfortable in that chair behind you and I was concerned you would catch cold again so I moved you to the bed during the night.”
Selene’s glare dulled and she looked at him in confusion. “Why was I…” she trailed off when she caught sight of the king’s wings that were bandaged heavily from the fiasco the other night. Everything came back to her then. The ball, Francesca, Zeke’s warning, the dragon attack, the kiss…
Selene’s face took on a light blush when she recalled the events that had transpired and hid behind the edge of the bed childishly as she muttered a timid “oh” of recognition.
Helios continued to smile in amusement at her remembrance of all the events, especially the kiss judging from her new found shyness. “Yes. Oh indeed,” he replied. “No I’m sure it’s very cold and very uncomfortable down there on the floor so why don’t you rejoin me in the bed where it’s comfortable.”
She shook her head, the blush growing on her face. “I’m fine where I am thank you,” she replied. “It’s very comfortable down here, far more so than the bed.”
