Chapter 5:
Thank You
When Selene walked into her Science class the first thing she was greeted with was the sight of a man hanging from the ceiling, a noose around his neck keeping him aloft. She hoped that Alice didn’t have the same teacher or the sight of the man, grinning like an evil clown, might scare her to death. Sights like this were normal for Selene so it didn’t bother her much as she walked right past it and approached the teacher.
“Hello, my name is Selene Shay,” Selene introduced. “I just transferred here from my old school in Maine.”
The woman gave Selene a warm smile and shook her hand. “It’s nice to have you as part of our class Selene,” the woman stated. Her eyes caught sight of the rosary beads on Selene’s wrist and she gave them a quizzical look, like many before her that have seen them strung about the raven haired girl’s wrist. She said nothing about them and released Selene’s hand. “Now, we’ll have to put you in a group. We do a lot of group work in this class, as you might have noticed, and I have everyone separated for just such occasions.”
From the back of the classroom a hand shot up. “Yes Molly?” the teacher asked.
“We'll take her!” Molly declared with a beaming smile.
The teacher nodded and turned towards Selene. “You will be in Molly and Zeak’s group then,” the teacher said nothing as she motioned for Selene to take her seat at their lab table
Selene nodded to the teacher and made her way to the back and sat next to Molly. Molly smiled at her and gave her a hard clap on the back. “It’s been awhile hasn’t it?”
Selene smiled, her hand going to rub where Molly had smacked her. For a tiny girl Molly’s strength was incredible. “Yes it’s been so incredibly long since I’ve seen you last.”
Molly smiled at her and turned to the young man that shared the lab table with her. “This be my brother, Zeak.”
Selene turned her attention towards the boy that sat next to Molly. He was completely different from Molly in appearance. His brown hair fell into his blue eyes messily, like he just rolled out of bed, and he was dressed in the normal attire of a teenage boy; jeans, a green t-shirt, and sneakers, nothing as out there and eye catching as his sister.
Zeak smiled at Selene and extended his hand to her. “Nice to meet you,” he greeted in the same British accent as Molly.
Selene grabbed his hand and shook it. “Same.”
The class started soon after Selene was introduced to Molly’s brother. As soon as the teacher had finished giving instructions the students took it as incentive to resume their previous conversations while getting their materials together and beginning to work on the lab. Molly grabbed their group some safety goggles from the cart near the back of the class while Zeak began to get the materials on the lab table together.
“So, you're new huh?” Zeak asked, attempting at making conversation with the violet eyed girl.
Selene rolled her eyes at him, a smile playing at her lips. “What was your first clue? When the teacher assigned me to your group or the fact that I just started this class today?”
Zeak chuckled, a light blush playing on his face. “I suppose you’ve got me there.”
Molly returned with three pairs of goggles in hand, the lenses of each pair all smeared with finger prints and other gross resin from human hands. With a look of distaste Selene took the goggles and placed them on her face, daring not to clean the lenses in fear of what would come off on her shirt.
