Chapter 17:
The Coming Storm
“Roses?” Helios inquired as Selene picked up a bouquet of red flowers and took them to the counter.
“They were my mom’s favorite,” Selene stated as she greeted the florist at the counter.
“Hello Selene!” the florist greeted the mortal girl. “Come all the way back up here to visit your mom’s grave huh?”
Selene nodded. “Yeah it’s been awhile,” Selene stated as she handed the florist the amount she owed her.
“I love your hair,” the florist complimented with a smile. “It really frames your face well and makes your smile glow.”
Selene blushed slightly at the woman’s compliment and politely bade her farewell as she and Helios exited the flower shop, Helios lacing his fingers with Selene’s as they began walking in the direction of the cemetery.
“That woman seemed nice,” Helios stated as he watched Selene sniff the three roses she had purchased. “Do you know why roses were your mother’s favorite?”
“She loved the different meaning roses held,” Selene stated as she stopped sniffing the flowers and turned her gaze in front of her. “Different colored roses have different meanings and it fascinated her how many meanings one flower could have.”
“And do you like roses as well?” he asked, making a note to commit what she was saying to memory.
“I think they are lovely,” she stated. “A person can convey an array of feelings to another just by picking the right one.”
“And is there a certain reason you picked white?” he asked out of curiosity.
“Well white roses were her favorite,” Selene stated. “But white roses mean purity, innocence, silence, secrecy, reverence, humility, youthfulness, heavenly and ‘I am worthy of you’.”
“I always thought all roses meant the same thing,” Helios stated as the gates of the cemetery came into view.
Selene chuckled. “Well now you know so when you buy flowers for someone be a little more careful as to which ones you pick or you might end up accidentally telling someone they smell or something.” They approached the gates of the cemetery and Selene smiled up at the ankous that stood guard. “It’s been awhile gentlemen.” She greeted.
The guards relaxed their posture slightly as they gave their best skeletal smiles to the mortal girl. “Lady Selene,” the ankou on the left greeted. “It’s a pleasure to see you. You have been terribly missed.”
The other ankou said nothing in addition as his eyeless sockets locked on the king who stood with his fingers still laced with Selene’s. “Your Highness,” the guard greeted the king with a short bow. The opposite ankou looked where his comrade was gazing and immediately copied his actions. The king waved for them to stand up straight and they did so. Selene merely rolled her eyes and continued to smile at the guards.
“I’m here to visit my mom guys,” she stated. “Is it safe to enter today?”
“It is indeed My Lady,” the ankou on the right stated as they moved their scythes slightly so the mortal and king could enter.
