Chapter 16
Paloma sat across from her mother watching the crowd bustle around holiday shopping. Christmas was her favorite time of the year. Especially with Manhattan decked out in all her red and green glory.
She smiled softly as Carolers walked by the restaurant dressed up as if they were from the Dickens Era. In New York you can see anything sometimes.
“You’re not listening to a word I said” Maria broke in softly frowning at her daughter who looked pale “Are you sure you are well?” Maria asked in Spanish
“Yes mama, I am fine” Paloma smiled at her mother then took a sip of her hot chocolate
“I am worried about you” Maria said softly putting a hand over her daughter’s hand which felt cold, even in the warm restaurant.
“You are a Spanish mother, of course you worry” Paloma joked “If you’re not worrying, you’re bullying me and everyone else into eating more”
Maria glared mockingly at her daughter “I wouldn’t have to if you ate and didn’t make me worry”
Paloma smiled at her mother “I am fine mama, lets just enjoy this us time”
Maria nodded “It was nice of Lucas to send the limo for us today, makes Christmas shopping that much easier” she took a sip of her tea but keep both eyes on her daughter’s reaction.
Paloma sighed but she knew it had be coming, her mother had heard Lucas say he was coming by this morning. She had waited like a dutiful girlfriend would, but when it had reached noon and he hadn’t came or even called, she had called her mother and invited her to lunch and Christmas shopping.
And her mother being a mother had figured out why her daughter is with her and not her boyfriend.
“He didn’t send it mama, Ana did” she wouldn’t lie to her mother. Well not about everything.
“Lucas didn’t show up this morning, so when Ana called to see if we wanted to go shopping, I said yes” that was almost the truth.
Ana had almost blown her top when she had called this morning to see what Paloma was up to and she had replied cleaning. Finally both Paloma and Michael had managed to calm Ana down.
“You two are going to be pains in the ass aren’t you?” she huffed angrily “Why don’t I send the limo for you and Maria and I’ll join you for shopping after I jump my fiancé”
Paloma had laughed and shook her head “Thank you, and be gentle with him”
“He didn’t call?” Maria asked snatching her attention back.
“No” Paloma took a sip of her tea.
“Are you worried about him?”
Paloma frowned “Yes” and that made her angry as hell. She had called and called and right before she almost called Ana and canceled the shopping trip and rush over to his penthouse.
