I woke in a big bed plush and comfortable. I had no recollection of me doing anything, in fact there was no one next to me. I looked around slowly, the pain in my skull was excruciating.I'm in my own bedroom, what the hell?
"I'm glad we found you before you made some bad, life altering decisions." My dad looked beyond pissed, but at least he kept his voice low being careful, knowing I was nursing a hangover and all.
"Who are you?"
He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.
I cleared my throat and sat up. "Am I even related to any of you or have I been living with strangers my whole life." My voice became stronger as the emotion of it all poured out of me.
"Why am I here. Why did you lie to me my entire life, why does she hate me so much." My voice broke and I started crying. In between sobs I continued to speak, "What's wrong with me......... was it something I did......nobody wants me."I sat there crying with my dad comforting me the entire time. Trying to get me to breath and calm down.
After what seemed like forever. I stopped crying. My da- he gave me a huge hug. "I called in sick for you at the school, took a day off at work. Why don't you quickly shower and change. I have a surprise for you. I'll answer all your questions, okay?" I nodded wiping away the remnants of my tears with the edge of my index finger.I took a shower and changed into high waist shorts ,a crop top that said #flawless on it and a pair of red converse.
When someone tells you they have a surprise for you. You kind of expect that casual dress would work.
Obviously my da- he didn't get the message.
"I really don't like surprises ,just tell me where we're going . The anticipation is killing me." I whined.
"I swear I have never known a bigger drama queen in my life." He said laughing at my consistent attempts to ruin the surprise.
We finally stomped and I rushed out the car ,only to be stopped in my tracks when I saw a gorgeous restaurant. It had a royal feel to it. Filled with gold purple and even a red carpet at the entrance.
I turned back to him my shock ridden face.
"Close your mouth you might catch flies." He laughs as he gets out the car, locks it and begins to lead me towards the restaurant. I feel like a celebrity walking down the red carpet. An overly underdressed one at that.
We sat down at our table shown to us by the waitress. The inside took my breath away. Completely awestruck I sat down. After the waitress left us with our menu, I started looking at my menu.
Damn this stuff costs more than my life.
Not really, but you know what I mean...."What do you think honey?" I raised an eyebrow at my dad.
"I think I have made an exception to my hatred of surprises, also I think I'm going to either be poisoned or completely fulfilled, because I have absolutely no idea what any of these meals are." My dad chuckles. My dad orders his meal and when the waitress asks me I grab her pen, close my eyes and twirl the pen in my hand. When I stop I choose whatever the pen landed on and immediately order it. The waitress looks at me skeptical. Probably thinking I should be admitted into an asylum.
My dad chuckled. After a few minutes of awkward silence he finally broke the silence.
"Eh erm..." he cleared his throat, he then took my hand ,gently pulled it to the centre of the table. "Anything... Ask me anything. I swear I'll be as honest as I can be."I swallowed. "I might not get this courage again, so here goes nothing." My voice sounded foreign. I guess after all the shock I hadn't spoken in a while.
I tried to steady my breathing. I had so many questions it seemed impossible to choose one to start with specifically.
Noticing my internal battle he spoke up. "I know this is hard for you. I have never been in a situation like this and I can't say I know how you feel but I'd like to... If you'll let me."Silence.
"I'll start with the basics you probably wanna know. Your mother -" I glared at him. "Hmph." He sighed. "Fine, your adoptive mother and me your adoptive father," he emphasised the adoptive part. I rolled my eyes.
Real mature... real mature
"We had a child. Seth, but after his birth your mo- adoptive mother had a few complications. She couldn't have another child, about 12 years later she was a little restless about having another child so we decided to adopt one. A baby girl." "So why am I older than Seth, also Seth was 12 two years ago so I'm pretty sure I'd have to be two years old which I most definitely am not!" "Calm down." "Ho do you expect me to stay calm when you're not giving me answers!" I half shouted at him. "I said calm down so you could let me finish." "Oh." I went silent again, and hung my head blushing. "Anyway. Like I was saying, we were set and ready to adopt a newborn from Ukraine. Umm, a friend of mine had been losing it. His wife too. We both worked in the police force." His voice is noticeably lower now ,his friend meant a lot to him you can tell.
"Their daughter had been missing since she was 12. Scary huh, we tried to help out but after four full years..."
I noticed the tears sliding down his cheeks his voice is croaky.
"He.. couldn't take it anymore... His daughter was everything to him and... We found him at the top of our building on the roof. I spoke to him. Tried to talk him down but...." he put his head on the table and his sobs became louder ,I got up from my seat and bent down on my haunches next to him. Slowly comforting him. I'd never ever seen him cry. I was in shock. The emotion of his pure sadness brought tears to my eyes I wiped my eyes before he saw me."I'm so so sorry." He looked up at me sorrow in his eyes, he curved his lips up smiling at me.
Confused I asked, "what?"
"You remind me so much of him. His wife... He left her all alone. She found out she was pregnant and had another daughter. She tried to be happy but... A week or so after she gave birth. A miracle happened, her daughter turned up,out of the blue she just showed up at the station. She was beaten and bruised, so we questioned her. We found out she had been... stuck in a warehouse with other young girls being forced to do things they didn't want to and um... she had betrayed one of the men who was there she had told him she would leave and never go back. She couldn't leave the other girls so she 'snitched' told us everything was practically in tears the whole time. We found out that the men were a new division of the Russian mafia that used women from all over the world, for...you know. I can't even bring myself to say it. They had been in Russia for three years. They had been drugged ,chained ,beaten and used. They were brought to America to start working for some other clients closer to home. Some were going to be sold on the black market. That night we went to the warehouse ready to take action. I was in charge of the operation. It was close to me and I refused to fail. The operation ran smoothly. She helped us sneak them out quietly, we surrounded the house. We actually managed to catch the leader of the operation and his family. We lost a lot of our men and many of their men escaped, sadly. But, what's a dog without its master. A lot of the girls were put under witness protection until they were no longer minors, some still are. As for my friends' daughter. Her mom couldn't look her in the eye. She was filled with so much pain and guilt. We moved her out of her home town. Just to be safe. The operation leader was sentenced to 25 years in prison because of quite a few crimes he committed. Unfortunately his wife and son went back to Russia Scott free. Not even community service.""So the girl left town and you never saw her again?"
"No...I begged my wife to adopt her since the girls mother....yeah. she unhappily caved in. We adopted that girl at the age of sixteen. She was in bad shape. She suffered from memory loss due to PTSD and bi-polarity. We kept her away from news and showered her with gifts and love. We were a real family.
"Oh my god ,that's awful." He looked sad, stressed and exhausted.
This had taken a lot out of me too. I felt a pang in my chest I felt awful for this girl, but there was one thing I didn't understand."Wait,wait. I don't wanna be rude or inconsiderate, but this girl... what does she have to do with my adoption. How does she link to me."
"We didn't adopt you ,as a newborn Juliet..."
"This girl I'm talking about doesn't link to you. She is you...A/N
