"Poor thing" I think, watching Phil get pummeled by dodgeballs. I plug in my headphones and tune out for the rest of class, occasionally glancing up to watch.

I'm glad when lunch comes, but I don't eat much. First drama club meeting is this afternoon and I'm planning on dragging Phil with me. I'm slightly terrified.

The rest of the day passes in a breeze of boring classes and droning teachers. When the last bell rings, I practically run to the front of the school where I wait for Phil.

"Hey," I say as he comes out. "Wanna come to the drama club meeting with me?"

"Yeah, I guess" he answers. "But like I said, I'm not really good on stage."

"That's okay, auditions aren't for a few days, and besides, we always need stagehands!"

He nods and gives a small smile. "Okay sounds good. "

I lead him down the hall to our auditorium.

"Waoah..." he murmurs.

"Pretty cool, huh?" And it is; we got a grant from some old alumni last year and we were able to make an actual stage, with wings and curtains and lights and everything.

I lead him down to the front few rows of seats. Middle section, three rows back, 6 seats from the right. Best vantage point of the house, in my opinion.

The club director is sitting on the edge of the stage, his legs dangling off the edge.

"Hey Mr. Vanderbilt!" I called. "I br-"

My words are cut off as the door slams open.

"I'm not late!!" Jamie yells, racing into the room, bookbag open and bouncing, jacket flying behind her. She skids to a stop in front of us.

"Actually, you're early" Mr. Vanderbilt says, surveying us over the tops of his wire rimmed glasses. He was about 25 or so, but he dressed like a professor from the 40s.

"Hmmph. That's a first." she mutters, plunking her bag onto the ground beside her and falling into a chair, running her fingers through her pale green hair. Huh. It was purple last time I saw her.

I can tell Phil doesn't really know what to make of it all, so I cut in. "Um, guys, this is Phil." I say. "He's new this year. I convinced him to come to at least one meeting so he could decide if he wanted to be in the show."

"Welcome, Phil," Mr. Vanderbilt says, smiling warmly. "You can call me Mr. Vanderbilt. Or just Vanderbilt, as most of the other students do."

"And this is Jamie," I say.

She looks up, and gives us both a lazy salute before going back to her book (HelterSkelter?). I can feel her gaze as she continues to survey us under the pretense of reading.

She winks at me, and I blush. It seems she's already picked up on my crush on Phil.

Damn, she's good.
