I have been doing theatre for 5 years and auditions are still nerve wracking.
I felt mostly prepared until I stepped into the greenroom. Everyone was doing some last minute practicing, but they were all singing a different song than the one I'd rehearsed!
"Danny, what's going on?" I asked, walking up to him. "Why's everyone practicing Freak Flag?"
"Didn't you read the audition packet, man? That's the ensemble song."
"What?! No, I don't..." I rifle through my bag looking for the audition information. "Oh my god....I grabbed the wrong packet!"
I start to freak out, but Danny hands me his sheet music. "Here, look over this. It's not a super hard song, I bet you can learn it in like 15 minutes."
"Oh my lord thank you so much I'll give it back as soon as I'm don't thank you thanks" My words jumble out as I try to figure out the song.
"Don't worry 'bout it" he says, and moves off to see what everyone else is doing.
By the time my name is called, I know the piece fairly well. I wish I could tell you more, but to tell the truth auditions are always just a blur in my memory.
Phil and I catch the bus home and when he drops his bag onto the seat, a few colour swatches fly out.
"Wow, Jamie's working you hard already, huh?"
"Yeah, she said I had a good eye for colour as soon as she saw my socks." He rolls up one leg of his jeans and I see his bright blue, pink, and yellow checkered sock.
"Wow." As much as I don't really like bright colours, I do like his socks.
"It's okay though. Have you been in the costume shop before? It's so big! And cool! I could live up there forever!"
He pauses for a moment before asking "So how did your audition go?"
"Not as well as I'd hoped, but I don't think it was that bad."
"When do you find out what part you got?"
"Woah, slow down. I don't even know if I got a part yet. And if I did I wouldn't find out till Sunday night. So I get a nice 36 hours of serious stressing!"
"Ooh sounds fun." he replies. "But I'm sure you'll get in."
"Hmm." I say and make the face that Chris says makes me look like 'a stressed out doge'. "We'll see."
"Well, break a leg anyway." Phil stands up as the bus pulls to a stop. "Now if you'll excuse me, this is my stop and I have to get home and start colour sorting."
He waves at me, his hands full of colour schemes, and then the bus pulls away and he's gone.
I plug my headphones in and sigh contentedly as I close my eyes for the rest of the drive.
I honestly don't remember much about the weekend other than a general sense of anxiety and anticipation for the cast list. I got almost no sleep on Sunday night. I waited up for the email, which didn't come in till 4 in the morning. By that time I was so sleepy I just scanned the list for my name and then passed out at my desk. But I got in! I was the Big Bad Wolf!
ik this feels super short I'm sorry but it made sense to end the chapter here. I'm kinda gonna jump around in the next bits or something idk
the show I was in is over and I have such a feeling of emptiness and longing lmao
happy holidays!
