Wow. Theatre kids are weird. Don't get me wrong; drama club was really cool! Their theatre is huge! It's got lights and an orchestra pit and real audience seats too, not just the squeaky, uncomfortable metal folding chairs we had at my old school.
When we got to the auditorium, Dan led us straight to a couple of seats in the middle of the audience. It was just us and a man Dan introduced as Mr. Vanderbilt.
Then this girl, I think her name was Jamie, came busting in. She reminded me a little of Jayden honestly, but weirder. She was reading HelterSkelter, which is pretty good. I read it last year when I was going through a forensics phase.
Anyway, after she came in, other kids started flowing in too. Mr. Vanderbilt stood onstage and motioned for the rest of us to join him. We formed a circle and began introducing ourselves.
I didn't pay as much attention as I should have, probably but I remember a few of the kids.
There was Taj Gutierrez, a chubby, tan-skinned boy with a loud voice and easy laugh; Cara Reynolds, a girl with hair the colour of red velvet cake; Jamie, who only apparently never uses her last name and fidgets constantly, always tapping her wrist or the cover of her book; Danny Oswin, a pretty, dark-skinned boy who settles next to Jamie, fidgeting the same way she does, but with more of a dancers loose grace; Will Montoya, who I remember for their blue streaked hair and the way they began their introduction with their name and pronouns, instead of their name and a hobby, like everyone else.
The rest of the faces pass by in a blur, until it's my turn and I manage to stutter out "Hi, I'm Phil and I get stagefright."
The meeting went well, I guess. Mr. Vanderbilt mainly just debriefed everyone on the fall play. Shrek the Musical?? Apparently? Everyone got a packet with the music they would have to audition with depending on the part they wanted.
Dan was so cute. He was so animated, grinning the whole time.
I'm still mulling over the afternoons events as we climb onto the bus, settling into a seat towards the middle.
"So? What'd you think?" Dan asks, still smiling.
I'm trying to think of a polite way to say it was overwhelming, but I liked it anyway. Dan seems to read my mind though.
"It's kind of a lot to take in, huh? I felt pretty overwhelmed my first meeting."
"Yeah....It was great though, I would definitely go back." I say, grinning at him.
"Really?" He asks excitedly. "Are you gonna audition, then?"
"Er...Probably not."
His face loses its (ridiculously) happy expression slightly so I hurriedly add "But I would maybe like to try costumes and makeup!"
His grin returns. "Great! You're gonna want to talk with Jamie, she usually heads those departments." He smiles widely at me.
I smile back at him; his excitement is contagious, and his grin is really quite adorable!
"I like your dimples," I say, surprising myself. Where did this flirting-ish thing come from?
His face immediately flushes. "E-erm-thanks," he stutters out, raising a hand to his cheek, brushing over his dimples.
The bus pulls to a stop at the corner of my street.
"See you tomorrow, Dan!" I says as I hoist my bag onto my shoulder and make my exit.
"Erm-bye!" he manages, giving an oddly spastic sort of little wave, before returning his hand to his cheek.
The bus pulls away almost before I've even stepped off and I'm left in a cloud of exhaust, wondering what could have possessed me to compliment a boy on his dimples.

i think updates will be about once a month from now on, but over the next like 8 weeks or so I'm gonna be super busy bc my theatre groups play goes on in a month and it'll be running for every weekend in November and that means a lot of rehearsals that go past like 11 or whatever so I'm preparing to be horrifically sleep deprived. I love show business.
