I kinda love the last day of a show. I mean, I hate that it's over, but I also like the feeling of finality. Bows are always the best part of the last night. Everyone's crying and laughing and glad the productions over and sad to see it go and it's just this amazing energy.
Usually I go out with Jamie and Danny, if they're speaking to each other, and some other miscellaneous cast members after the last show, but tonight I decided to do something different.
When I was little, there was this field like a block away from my house. Sometime around my fifth birthday, it started getting developed into a playground. I loved it. I hung out there all the time, even after I was in secondary school. And when we first moved here, I would take walks and explore the neighbourhood. That's when I found this park. It's not as big as the one from my childhood, but it's got some swings and sand and a slide.
And I had a plan. Which is not working out exactly as I planned. So I text Phil again.
Phil:
Sorry, be there soon!!I set some things up and then swing until Phil arrives.
"Hey, Dan," he says, then gasps. "Oh my god! Did you do all this?"
I grin. "Yep! I've put out a picnic blanket thing? and also I ordered Chinese takeaway so we could have a sort of closing night picnic thing."
"Oh my god," he says again. "This is so amazing and sweet and — just — wow." We sit down and he kisses me. "I love you."
"I love you, too," I answer, relishing the fact that I can say that. "Now let's eat; the foods getting cold."
When we finish eating we lie back and he takes my hand as we watch the sky. "This is so cliche," I say. "Like if I found this scene in a young adult novel I would be disgusted."
"Why?" Phil asks.
"Look at us! We're high schoolers laying in a park at night holding hands and looking at the stars. All we need is some cliche romance novel quote and some orchestral strings." I pause. "But it's okay because it's us. If it was anyone else though, it'd be terrible."
"Speaking of cliches, did you know I can read stars?" Phil asks.
"Didn't we do this already?"
"I used to be a huge astronomy kid," he continues as if he didn't hear me me. "See? Those over there are the Big Dipper, and that line of three is Orion's Belt and those ones over there say 'Dan, I love you'!"
"Mm I like that one better than the 'nerd' comment.
We lay back down and our hands find each other again.
I'm rather glad that the dark hides the flush of my cheeks. "I love you, too" I repeat, still relishing that fact that I can say that.
aww this is so cute I can't believe I wrote this
I had such a good day today omg it was so lovely
hope everyone else had/is having/will have an amazing day today too!
