The curtains close and I cheer along with my cast and crewmates. I'm running on adrenaline and I feel as if I'm floating as attack Phil with a hug. "It's done, It's done! Opening night is over, oh my god!" I hug him again then grab his hand and pull him towards the doors. "Come on, everyone's gonna go meet outside!" I say, making our way into the crush of people also headed to the lobby.
After every show, everyone goes out to the front lobby, which is really just sort of a cafeteria. But everyone is in costume and we get to say hi to whoever came to the show and sometimes the little kids like to get their pictures taken with some of the cast.
"Hey, Mum! Hey, Dad!" I run up to my parents.
"Oh, Danny, that was so wonderful!" My mum says, enveloping me in a hug.
"Thanks, Mum, but please just call me Dan." I hate being called Danny, plus it can be confusing having a Dan Howell and a Danny Oswin.
"I thought it was a good show, son. And you look lovely in your dress," my father comments. Coming from him, this is fairly high praise. He doesn't really like musicals.
"Oh, and who's this?" Mum asks, noticing Phil behind me.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry. Mum, Dad, this is my friend Phil. I convinced him to join drama and he helped Jamie with the costumes and stuff."
Phil waves shyly.
"Oh, you're Phil! I've heard about you." Phil turns sort of pinkish.
"Well, you did a wonderful job with the costumes." Phil turns a bit more pinkish.
"And Jamie is such a nice girl. Does she still have that pink hair?" She asks me."No, it was purple for a little while and now it's green." I answer. "Hey, we'll meet you guys later, we have some more people to see."
We say goodbye to my parents and move on through the room.
"Phil!" Someone calls out. A lady about my mom's age comes over and hugs him. "You were right, dear, that was a wonderful play."
"Hi, Mum," Phil greets her. "Where's Dad?"
His mum looks around. "You know, I'm not sure, I had him a moment ago. Ah, well. We'll find him before we leave."
Phil rolls his eyes slightly before gesturing to me. "Mom, this is my friend Dan. He was in the play."
"Oh, of course! You were the Big Bad Wolf! Wonderful job, dear, it's so nice to meet you." When she looks at me, I notice her eyes are the same striking shade of blue as Phil's.
"Dan's the one who dragged me to drama club in the first place, Mum," Phil informs her.
"Well, I'm very glad you did. It certainly keeps Phil from moping about the house all day."
"I'm glad I did, too, ma'am. Phil's definitely part of the theatre family now."
"I can't wait to see what you guys put on next!" She says. "Phil, I'm off to find your father. Call me when you're ready to leave, okay, love?"
"Alright, bye, Mum." Phil waves as his mother bustles off.
"Oi, Dan!" Someone calls. I turn and see a shock of green hair weaving through the crowd. Jamie reaches us Slightly out of breath.
"Hi guys. Listen, Danny's just gonna go get into street clothes then we're gonna head off. You coming?"
"Oh that's right, I almost forgot." I turn to Phil. "We usually go out to eat opening night. You wanna come?"
"Yeah, sure," he answers. "I just need to let my mum know."
He calls her and I chat with Jamie for a moment before he taps me on the shoulder. "Um, where is it?"
"It's this place called Duke's. It's in town and they have ice cream pie." Jamie answers.
"When?" Phil asks.
"It'll be done by midnight, 12:30 at the latest." I tell him.
"Can I get a ride from someone?" He asks.
"I can give you a ride to and from." I say.
"Great, thanks." He relays the answers into the phone. "Uh-huh. Okay. Thanks, Mum. Yeah, see you later. Bye, love you."
He hangs up. "Yeah, I can go."
"Hell yeah, ice cream pie!"
Jamie cheers. "Okay, cool, meet you guys there." She grins and disappears into the crowd.I grin at Phil. "Welcome to the theatre, where we have a fuckton of traditions, and if any of them are broken, then bad things will happen."
"What kind of things?"
"Bad ones. We're not really sure, as no one wants to break traditions and find out. Theatrefolk are a superstitious lot. "
"Wow, great, I guess we have to go to dinner then."
"Oh, trust me, you won't regret it. There's a reason we pretty much only go to Duke's. A little cos of superstition, mostly cos of really good food." I smile and he grins back. "I'll meet you in the front in about 15 minutes; I need to go change. And maybe shave," I add, tugging at the fake wolf hair glued to my face.
this is so fitting we actually just finished opening night for the production of spamalot I'm in. like I mean we just finished 2 hours ago
it was good except my top and skirt fell like halfway off while I was being a can can dancer and my friend got stabbed and had to get stitches.
also I finally gave in to my petty self and let myself hate this one girl so that's nice.
