The rest of our break passes uneventfully, except for the Friday before school starts. Dan and I are sitting on the couch in his living room, watching One Punch Man together, when his mom walks in.
"What's up?" Dan asks, clicking the pause button.
"I'm going down to the grocery," she says. "Would you boys like anything?"
"No, thanks," I answer, but Dan asks "Do we have any crisps?"
"Yes, there's at least one packet of salt and vinegar in the pantry," she says.
"Alright, I think we're good then."
"See you boys later!" She calls, and I hear her keys jingle as she closes the front door.
Suddenly, I'm on edge. I don't know why. I shouldn't be.....except that now we're alone. Again.
I glance at Dan out of the corner of my eye. He's staring straight at the TV, unblinking, his fingers tapping quickly against his thumb.
"I'm gonna go get those crisps," he says, getting up.He comes back with a bowl full, and sits down again, only closer to me this time. I take his hand and he squeezes back, though he still doesn't look at me.
He looks over as the outro music plays, though. "Hey Phil?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you remember, er, last week...? "
"Yeah." He doesn't say anything for a moment so I continue. "Hey Dan?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you want to, maybe, ...do that again?"
He doesn't answer, and I can feel myself turning red, then he leans over and kisses me. I kiss him back and he tastes slightly of salt and vinegar and then suddenly it happens again. Everything is in HD and I feel hyperaware of Dan, but our surroundings sort of fade into the background. The kiss gets deeper and hungrier, almost, as if even though we couldn't be closer, we're not close enough.
We break apart just long enough to sort of catch a breath. "I'll take that as a yes?" I ask, grinning. He doesn't answer, just kisses me again.
I'm enjoying everything about this; the sort of fluttering way his hands move about me, the odd comfort of the weight of Dan's body on top of mine, even the sharp sensation of his hip bone digging into mine. Actually, I might be enjoying this a little too much...
"Sorry," I mutter to Dan, after I feel my teeth scrape against his lower lip.
"Don't be," he answers. "That was actually kind of hot."
And then we hear the front door open. Dan's eyes widen and I'm sure his expression of panic matches mine.
By the time his mom walks into the living room, we're sitting on opposite ends of the couch, Dan with the bowl of crisps on his lap and I'm hugging one of the large throw pillows. I barely manage to unpause the TV before she enters the room.
"Hello, boys!" She pauses. "Is this the same episode you were watching when I left?"
"Nope," Dan says, straight-faced, if not slightly pale. "You know anime, Mom. It all looks the same. "
