GABI
Though I knew the blanket would bring me quite a bit of comfort, I couldn't help but reach for the box first.
My muscles ached so horribly I had to sit to open it.
After planting myself in front of it, nestling myself into a small patch of dirt, I opened it's four cardboard flaps.
I knew that one day my mom's "car safety and doomsday prep" advice would help me out. And now looking into the box of perfectly fitted items I knew she had been right.
SOPHIA
"So are you gonna talk about it?" I ask him as we take a seat in his car.
"What?" He asks turning over the key and quickly pulling out of the lot and onto the road.
I gesture at the interior of the car with a crazy exaggerated movement trying to convey to him that his car was what I'm talking about.
"Oh yeah, ah." He stumbles over his words intentionally not looking over at me. "My noncompete clause ended and not a week later I was approached by a company to redesign their code. It paid pretty well."
"Yeah I'll say. Would I have heard of this company?"
" Yeah. Its ah.. Google." He says as he again adjusts his glasses on his nose.
"Google?" I say half as a question but also feeling absolutely shocked. "You worked for..."
"Google, yeah. It was just a short term reboot thing, I'm done now."
"Ok, so about Gabi..." I say trying to focus our attention back on her and now focusing my thoughts on the road, looking for any sign of her or her car.
"Yeah?." He asks as he takes a turn almost too sharply, making me have to hang on to the handle on the door.
"Jeez, speeding much?"
"It's not me, I'm going the speed limit. It was that turn back there, it's way too sharp for the speed limit."
"Look theres another." I say pointing ahead.
"Yeah, I see it." He says this time slowing to about half his speed as he takes the turn.
"Who fricken designed these roads?" I say still having to hold onto the handle.
"I don't know but now I'm even more worried about Gabi." He says finally looking at me, with a great look of worry in his eyes.
