Chapter 5
Helen's heart sank in her chest as she saw what was going on through Arulan's eyes. But she didn't have time to focus on the fact that Ella was dying. Let Sapphire and the others try to fix that. What she had to do was disable the bomb.
Sapphire had dozens of people who could help her heal Ella. Even if the only thing they could do was follow her orders, Ella's condition was a physical thing they could fix. But the fact was that there were a severe minority of magicians with mental powers. Helen was one of the few people who could actually do something about the insanity bomb.
Taking a deep shaky breath, Helen extended her focus, challenging her telepathic powers to enter Ella's mind. To her surprise, she brushed against a second mental presence, struggling to break through the mental barriers that Varmer had constructed in Ella's mind. It was another her.
Raven.
Through their linked minds, Helen alerted Raven to her presence, sensing the latter's initial surprise and then joy at her survival. Together, they struggled to smash the shield, slamming into it with all their combined mental strength to no avail.
Try slipping in through any possible chinks in the armour, Helen suggested.
You do it, Raven replied. I'll try to weaken the shield for you to enter.
Helen felt Raven, or rather her own mind slam into the barrier again. With a soft, light touch, barely noticeable, she tried to slide in. But there was nothing, no fracture, nothing that she could do to make herself go further in. The barrier actually felt like smooth glass without a single crack in it. Of course, Varmer had made an invincible wall around his bomb until the time of detonation.
Calm down, Helen, another voice said, startling her. It was clearly a guy and obviously someone who had certain leverage over the mind. But whoever it was, she knew that it was not someone on Kayla's list of who to trust.
Great.
It's okay, the voice urged. I'm not going to betray your confidence. Helen, the wall has to go down before the bomb explodes. If not, only Ella will go nuts when it deploys. So when she dies, or the timer goes off, the wall will go down. I need you to go in at that moment and erase the bomb.
Erase the bomb? Helen repeated.
It's Romulus, Raven responded. He can remove the memory of the bomb, right?
Hypothetically.
Great, Helen thought sarcastically.
As she attempted to slam into the mental defences again, she felt it slip and falter beneath her attempt. Before she could alert the others, Raven smashed into it too. It was a good thing that all of their minds were open to one another at that point in time. Romulus's presence streamed past them through the tiny crack in the wall. Struggling, Helen shoved her mental consciousness against the wall to keep it from closing. Raven did the same to the other side.
