Chapter 46
Troy gingerly touched Dahlia's jacket-covered shoulder. "Does that hurt?" he asked tentatively.
"No," Dahlia said, looking down at his hand, wishing that she could touch his hand with her own. She swallowed hard against the lump in her throat.
"Troy, let go of her," Sapphire said, her voice unsteady. "And Dahlia, show me your shoulder. I want to see if it's bleeding."
Troy obliged and Sapphire cautiously pulled the jacket back from Dahlia's shoulder. She was extremely careful not to let her fingers brush the area, but to all of their relief, there was no blood.
"It seems like only humans can't touch you," Sapphire said, eyeing Dahlia's skin tentatively.
"Maybe she can touch animals or plants?" Troy asked hopefully.
Sapphire shook her head. "I don't know. We can't risk it, not until I get my strength back to heal her. For all we know, she can't touch anything that once was alive. That's why she's wearing man-made materials now."
Dahlia looked down at the polyester shirt she was wearing. "That'll do wonders for my fashion style," she joked, trying to lighten the mood.
"I'm sorry, Troy, Dahlia," Sapphire said, rubbing her eyes vigorously. "I'm not sure if there's anything I can do for you. At least... not right now."
"It's okay," Dahlia said quickly. "It's not like I'm dying or anything. You should tend to the others who need your help more."
Sapphire sighed, tugging at her hands agitatedly. "I'm sure there's an antidote, Dahlia. Varmer wouldn't want you like this forever. He wanted you to have Troy's child; we all know that. There's got to be a way to fix it."
"I know," Dahlia said, slipping her jacket back on. "But right now, you need to help the others. And I need to find a pair of gloves."
Sapphire cast them both a sad look. "I promise, I'll find a way to fix you and Helen once I've made sure that the others aren't dying anymore, okay?"
"Sure," Dahlia said smiling faintly as Sapphire moved away. "We'll be just fine."
She turned to Troy, who was now holding a box of medical latex gloves. "Do you think these will be okay? They're made of latex. Would they agitate your skin?"
Agitate wasn't a very good word for it. If Dahlia's skin came into contact with any human, they automatically started bleeding. It was like having an intense case of haemophilia.
"I can only try, right?" Dahlia asked, cautiously taking the box from him so that her fingers didn't brush his skin. "Thanks."
Troy smiled back at her, but he didn't say anything as she pulled on the gloves. He ached to touch her or to help her, but there was nothing he could do, nothing to help her. She was as helpless to do anything about her condition as he was.
