Chapter 37
Varmer's triumph at containing Troy and Dahlia in a metal box was short-lived. He immediately felt the pressure of Helen's telepathic attack on his own mental barriers. It took more energy than he cared to admit to fend off her attacks. His shields held, but her magic was strong. Her powers slid along the barrier, unable to find a single crack or weakness, but Varmer's control was not infinite. He could feel himself weakening, though hopefully slower than Helen was.
"Romulus, help me," Helen gasped, inhaling short sips of air.
His magic was also mental magic; he had helped her disable the bomb in Ella's brain before, much to Varmer's fury. Each time Arulan's rebels messed up his plans, the more Varmer wanted to kill them. But Varmer could not risk attacking Romulus yet; his attention was completely consumed with defending himself from Helen's attacks. There was only him, Dr Lucy and possibly Tia and Zara against the other seven, eight if one counted Raven.
Romulus was swinging his staff in every direction he could see; bolts of ice were coming in from all directions thanks to Dr Lucy's magic. Wind whipped right and left, barely knocking the ice off course. If Tia or Zara decided to join Varmer's side in the war, Romulus would definitely be dead.
Where was Sapphire? Varmer had not seen the Magician of Water since all the fighting and confusion had begun. All he knew was that the other girl was not in Romulus's circle of protection, which was a good thing. If Varmer could kill her, the rebels were doomed. They were relying on her to protect them if they got injured. The only good thing was that Sapphire could not bear to take another person's life, even at the risk of her own. The spy had told him that; she needed another magician's protection. But Romulus was tied to Helen and Jenna, figuratively if not literally. He could not leave them for Dr Lucy would kill them both before they could blink. Troy and Dahlia were trapped in the metal box. Tamarak was unconscious and Raven was most likely dead. Sapphire was on her own.
Varmer let out a roar, letting Helen know that he was not done for. He shouted orders at Tia and Zara, uncaring about their allegiances because he knew that none of his followers, much less Tia and Zara, who had been with him for at least three centuries, would ever betray him despite Kayla and Benjamin's rebellion.
"Zara, kill them now and I will bring Linden back to life!" he yelled, a dangerous, yet almost frantic note in his voice.
"Don't listen to him!" Helen shouted. "I'm not just saying it because you might fight against us, but I'm saying it because it can't be done!"
Varmer cut her off before she could continue. "Coming from someone who has been brought back from the dead, I find that hypocrisy laughable," he sneered.
Helen continued like he hadn't interrupted her at all, even as they struggled to overpower each other's' mental magic. "Yes, Kayla brought me back to life," she said. "But, Zara, Kayla sacrificed her life for mine. One of us had to die for the other to live. And you know as well as I do that Varmer will not give up his life for Linden's! He's just giving you a bunch of empty promises!"
