Chapter 30

"Absolutely not," Arulan fumed, arms crossed over his chest as he stared down the Flarehill siblings, Luna, Raven, Cedric and Sapphire.

Luna scowled back at him, her silver eyes flashing like mercury. "What other choice do we have, Arulan?" she demanded. "And don't you dare tell me that it's too dangerous."

Helen nodded, flipping her dark ponytail over her shoulder. "Arulan, Luna's discussed it with us and we've all agreed. We're only asking you out of respect and to let you know our plans so that you don't try to count on us being here. You know that we'll go anyway and it'll be a waste of time and resources if you keep magicians watching us all the time."

Arulan threw his hands up over his head in exasperation. "I thought Magicians of Earth are supposed to be the most stubborn people in the world but you five could give them a run for their money."

Troy grinned. He glanced at his companions; all of them, even Raven, were smiling too and were trying to hide them, with varying degrees of success. Arulan ran his fingers through his beard, looking thoughtful.

"Alright," he said grimly. "If you lot are right, which you often are," – he glanced at Luna as he said this – "I'll let you go. We'll have to come up with something to hide your disappearance from Varmer though... at least until it's too late for him to do anything about it."

"I've got that covered," Raven reassured him. However, she didn't paint a very comforting image; she was leaning against Cedric heavily and her face was as white as snow.

Arulan glanced at her sceptically, then turned and rummaged in the drawer of the desk that they had spread the map on. A second or two later, he fished out a large bar of chocolate. He handed it to Raven.

"Eat the lot," he said. "It'll get your blood sugar levels up and, trust me, you look like you need it."

Raven grimaced. "The mere thought of food makes me want to hurl," she admitted, pinching the corner of the plastic wrapper.

"Just eat some," Sapphire told her, taking the bar from her, tearing the wrapper and breaking off a large chunk. She handed it to Raven, adding, "As your doctor, I order you to eat that and finish it."

Raven gave a small laugh and took the chocolate with her free hand. She put it in her mouth and chewed. Once they had witnessed her taking the first bite, Arulan turned back to the others.

"Kathryn can help us too," he mused. "She can make illusions of you and hide your disappearance until it's too late."

Troy glanced at Luna. "Is that telling too many people?"

Luna interlaced her hands and pressed them onto the oak table on top of the map. "I think at this point, we just have to tell her and hope and pray that the spy doesn't learn about it. There's not much choice anymore and telling Kathryn will probably do more good than harm." She looked at the others. "Do you agree with me?"
