Chapter 44

"Get down!" Dahlia shouted, diving at Cedric to knock him to the floor.

They had no idea whom Varmer was shooting flames at, but Dahlia knew that she and Troy were not going to be his targets. She hadn't even realized what she was doing until she had pinned him to the floor, shielding his body with her own. Although she hated him, she also loved him as a friend and feelings like that were impossible to throw away, especially not in a split second. Even though he had betrayed all of them, her instinct had been to protect her friend, not the horrible person he really was.

When Jenna screamed, both Dahlia and Cedric scrambled off the floor to get to her.

"Jenna!" Dahlia shouted, but Cedric shoved her down.

"You're bleeding, Dahlia!" he protested; her palms were already streaked in blood thanks to her pushing him to the floor out of the way of the flames.

"You just want her for yourself!" Dahlia snapped back, but as she whirled around to run towards Jenna, Cedric grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.

"If you really thought that that was all I cared about, you would not have saved me," Cedric retorted, causing Dahlia to freeze for a second.

That was the only opportunity Cedric needed; he leapt to his feet and charged towards the fiery barrier. Varmer had splashed flames all along Jenna's physical shield, but neither Cedric nor Dahlia knew whether he had already breached it and erected his own fiery cage around them, or if he was currently attacking it.

                     "Get back, Cedric!"

This time, it was not Dahlia who leapt for him. Varmer had aimed a bolt of fire at him, intending to kill him, but at the last second, the flames swerved violently to the left, smacking into the flames that already existed around him.

Zara charged towards him, her staff extended for she had used it to save his life.

"Zara, no!" Tia shouted, racing after her sister. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?"

Beyond the flames, Troy dragged Jenna out of the way, trying to get her out of the way of danger. There was no way that she could maintain her shield much longer under Varmer's furious assault.

"Helen, Romulus, Tamarak, move!" Troy shouted; his voice could barely be heard over the crackling flames.

Tamarak was already moving, but now he was like lightning. He bolted backwards, protectively cradling Sapphire in his arms. Helen had her hands extended; she was targeting Varmer with as much magic as she could muster. Romulus had razor-like focus on him too; both of them were standing stock still, thanks to their need to concentrate.
