I am so sorry for not being able to update it in so long. I went to LA for a dance competition/workshop called Dance Excellence and I didn't have my laptop for the entire time. I literally returned home yesterday at midnight which is why this is my first opportunity to update my story. I hope you guys really like it! Sorry about the delay. :( Please vote and comment for it! :D Picture of Kayla and a baby Jenna on the side. ;)
Chapter 21
Arulan saw Troy's face fall faster than a ruined soufflé. Even the girls who were still in pain, remained silent. None of them knew what to do. Jared's shield had been a source of safety for all of them; they had felt protected on the Isle of Avalon. Even though Varmer had breached it twice, they had still had the illusion of being safe as long as Jared had been around to put up the shield again. Now, however, the entire island's safety had been compromised, thanks to the mysterious spy.
Slowly, methodically, for there was no longer any urgent rush to awaken Sapphire to save Jared's life, Troy fetched a potion bottle from the cupboard and a syringe. With a pang, he realized that even these medicinal potions had a limit now; Jared was no longer around to make any more. Potions that he had taken for granted before had now become so rare, that if they weren't careful, they would find themselves without any aid of that kind anymore.
"Troy! Arulan!" Romulus's panicked shout jolted both of them out of their daze.
"Are you contaminated?" Arulan demanded, his voice unsteady and unnecessarily loud.
"No," Romulus clarified quickly, making the other four conscious magicians in the room sigh with relief. "Look."
Both Arulan and Troy looked in the direction that Romulus was pointing. Ella's contaminated blood was eating through the sheets on the bed. The latex gloves that Romulus had pulled off had become a mess of wrinkled rubber.
Arulan swore viciously in the ancient language, not knowing what in the wide world he could do to stop the rapid flow of poison that was going to destroy the entire island. He looked at the two guys for help; they stared back at him, equally hopelessly.
"Okay," Arulan said grimly, making a spur-of-the-moment decision and hoping that it was not going to come back and haunt him for the rest of his days. "Troy – burning time. Romulus, wake Sapphire and make sure Helen and Raven get some treatment!"
Both of them leapt to follow his instructions; both of them felt more comfortable taking orders rather than issuing them at the moment. Troy tossed Romulus the bottle and syringe and then ran to Arulan's side, pulling out his staff. Arulan's lips were set into a hard line as he tried to keep his own staff steady in his trembling grip.
"Won't magic just make it worse?" Troy demanded, pausing in his actions.
Arulan's blue eyes met his momentarily, shared panic reflected in them. "I don't know," he admitted. "But what else can we do?"
They stared at one another blankly for a second and then Troy's eyes lit up. Without warning, he disappeared in his shadow. Arulan gritted his teeth but before he could do anything else, Troy had reappeared with Jenna, his niece, Kayla and Benjamin's only daughter.
She looked much better than she had a couple of hours ago. At any rate, she was clean and dressed in new clothes: jeans and an oversized sweater that she had rolled back several times to free her hands. Her brown curls were tamed into a ponytail and her honey-coloured eyes, so like Kayla's, were well rested.
