Chapter 45
Two hours later, Arulan stood, facing Luna, Troy, Dahlia, Cedric and a surprisingly docile Varmer. The others had all split up; Sapphire was in the infirmary, taking care of Helen. Jenna was with them to make sure that Sapphire was managing to cope with Romulus's death. Tamarak had accompanied the others to speak with Varmer, but he was standing further off from the others, next to the entrance to the door, making sure that no one was eavesdropping.
"Are you serious?" Arulan asked, rubbing his temples; they had just told him the entire story, starting from Cedric's betrayal to Varmer's current amnesia.
"Every word was the truth," Luna assured him, corroborating Troy and Dahlia's story.
"And Zara?" Arulan asked, latching on to the last thing that Luna had mentioned, which was Cedric saving Jenna's life after Zara had jumped ship.
Luna shook her head. "No sign of her. She's escaped."
Arulan sighed. "Most of Varmer's other magicians have resigned, including the last few members of Varmer's guard: Alyce and Alistair. But if Zara is out there, that's not good for anyone." He pursed his lips, like he hated to mention it, but he finally said, "Cedric, where would Zara go if she needed help?"
Cedric, who was standing in between Troy and Luna, was wearing magical handcuffs that Elliot had invented. If he tried to use magic or break out of his bonds, needles laced with a knockout serum would pierce his skin, sending him into an enchanted sleep. He had been somewhat cooperative after he had saved Jenna's life; he had let Luna take him into custody. However, that did not mean that he was obliging enough to answer every single question that was directed at him. He remained silent.
"Cedric?" Luna prompted, a warning note in her voice.
Cedric looked at her. "Luna, I'm not going to rat out where Zara might be going or where she might hide. She doesn't deserve to be imprisoned like you're intending to do with me."
Arulan glared at him. "That's really helping your case, you know," he snapped. "Refusing to answer questions that only you can answer is going to lengthen your sentence."
Cedric rolled his eyes. "Puh-lease, Arulan, you're not going to let me out of prison for the rest of my very long life. Which is eternal, so I'm basically going to stay in jail for the rest of my existence. It doesn't make a difference whether I give up Zara's secrets or not. Besides, she helped us attack and wipe Varmer's memories."
Arulan's glare turned into a vicious glower. "Right, Cedric," he retorted. "Next, you're going to be saying that you should be given immunity because you helped wipe his memories too and seeing as you saved Jenna's life. Those actions do not automatically eradicate the fact that you kidnapped her in the first place, tried to kill Luna, Sapphire and Raven and goodness how many other crimes!"
"That wouldn't be a bad plan," Cedric began, but Troy, Tamarak and Arulan all shouted, "Shut up!"
Luna and Dahlia exchanged a glance. It made complete sense that the three guys were more furious with Cedric than they were, even though Luna had been one of his victims. The loved ones of the survivors almost seemed to be more angry and cut up about their loved ones' fates than the actual victims.
