Chapter 13
The pain in Varmer's arm was bearable. But the ache from using too much magic was excruciating. It was a burn that was growing hotter and more intense with each breath. He hadn't felt that fire since before he had killed his father. But then again, he'd never been forced to use his powers to the extent of overuse in a long time.
An icy chill spread over the palm of his hand, cooling it slightly, making his temperature drop fractionally. Despite Dr Lucy's evident attempt to cool him down, Varmer could feel his body temperature increasing dramatically; if he was not careful, he was going to be dead in a couple of minutes which would not make anyone, not even the rebels, happy.
"Stay still," Dr Lucy told him. "You'll just make it worse."
Dr Lucy was a Magician of Water; she was one of the few magicians who could help him now that he was going to spontaneously combust. Magicians of Water could help Magicians of Fire and vice versa. The same was for the Magicians of Earth and Air.
The few Magicians of Water in Varmer's guard who could prevent him from spontaneously combusting included Dr Lucy, Leo, Alyce and Alistair but out of the four of them, only Leo had originally been in his main guard before the rebels had succeeded in killing a lot of his closer protectors including Alyce's twin sister, Alyssa, Cosmo who could fly and Ash who could talk to animals. Benjamin had been the one who had killed Varmer's wife, Ellie, and she in turn had killed Benjamin.
Benjamin's betrayal had been a great shock to Varmer. He who prided himself in his power, who believed that no one would have the nerve to rebel against him, had lost three magicians from his guard within the short span of twenty years. Amos had been lost when Arulan had brought Rachel, Dahlia and Ellis to the castle, Kayla had rebelled seven years previously and had escaped with Troy, Helen and technically, Jenna, and Benjamin had betrayed Varmer the previous night and succeeded in doing what Varmer had thought was impossible: he had killed Ellie.
Blinding hate filled Varmer's stomach as he thought about Benjamin. If only he could hurt Benjamin the same way that he had harmed Varmer. But Benjamin himself was dead and the person that Benjamin loved more than anyone else in the world, Kayla, had also passed on by sacrificing her life to bring back her half-sister, Helen, from the dead. If only he could hurt Jenna, Benjamin and Kayla's daughter, but since both of them were dead, he doubted they would feel anything even if he tortured Jenna to the brink of death. Unless, of course, he brought them temporarily back as ghosts and tortured Jenna in front of them. If she was alive, of course.
Varmer's thoughts were distracted as stabbing pain shot through his body. His mouth was forced open and liquid was poured down his throat. He coughed and choked but most of the potion went down anyway. The flames died down a little and he was able to force his eyelids open.
