Chapter 10
Anger flared up in Varmer's stomach but he had enough sense to realize what was going on. The previous night, Tamarak had proved that he had finally learned how to make things invisible without touching them; he had maintained an invisible shroud on Dahlia. Now he was doing the same thing; all Varmer had to do was distract Tamarak from his task.
Varmer slapped Tamarak across the face with as much strength as he could muster up, but as he moved his arm, a crippling pain shot up the muscle. A stifled groan escaped his lips; Tamarak, Linden and Darius stared at him like he was a ghost.
Tamarak wrenched himself free from Darius and aimed a blow at Varmer's injured arm. The Fire Immortal sprang backwards, barely dodging the jab; blocking Tamarak's blow would have been as painful as taking the strike. With a sharp swipe, Linden whacked Tamarak in the neck, knocking him off balance. If Tamarak wasn't as strong as he was, he would have been very badly injured. As it was, he staggered sideways, clutching at his throat.
Linden pressed his advantage, but even as he lunged forward, an invisible foot kicked him hard in the gut, causing him to double up, clutching himself in pain. He sprawled on the floor, groaning as Dahlia landed another kick to his ribs. Out of sheer dumb luck, he managed to block Dahlia's third kick at his head, wincing as her foot landed on his arm instead of his skull.
Darius lunged blindly at the invisible Dahlia, but Tamarak stuck out his leg at the last minute, tripping the Magician of Earth and causing him to stumble forward, slightly off-balance.
Linden staggered upright and unsheathed his sword, blindly swiping the weapon in every direction he could see in an attempt to hit Dahlia.
"Don't hurt her! I need her alive!" Varmer shouted.
Linden hesitated for a split second, giving Tamarak enough time to kick his hand hard, fracturing bones and knocking the sword out of his grip. Linden swore angrily, hissing in pain and cradling his injured hand to his chest.
"Stop the boy!" Varmer shouted, springing forward.
Darius made a wild attempt to grab Tamarak, but the latter twisted out of the way of Darius's grasping fingers and vanished in a ripple of light.
"Reveal!" Varmer commanded, waving his hands vaguely in the direction of the door.
For half a second, a bright golden glow bathed Dahlia and Tamarak in light, revealing their outlines for Linden and Darius to see. Then the glow faded almost instantaneously and Varmer collapsed in a chair, his face deathly pale and as white as Luna's porcelain skin.
"My lord!" Dr Lucy exclaimed; she had awoken from her stupor.
The door flew open as if pulled by an invisible force and Dahlia and Tamarak's footsteps echoed down the hall as they fled as fast as they could manage, given the circumstances. Darius dashed after them, closely followed by Linden who was clutching his right wrist and wincing with each step.
