Chapter 31
Varmer threw Dahlia to the floor in his throne room; she landed heavily and sort of bounced off the stone floor. A muffled moan emanated out of her mouth despite all her attempts to hold it back. Her face was twisted into an agonized expression even though she could not verbally express her pain.
Hot on his heels, Dr Lucy followed him, shoving Tamarak's unconscious body after her. Thanks to being in an enchanted sleep, he definitely thumped off the floor for he could not even brace himself to break his fall.
"My lord?" Both Varmer and Dr Lucy turned as two people entered the throne room, both wearing long black cloaks that swathed their muscled frames.
Varmer was pleased to realize that both Leo and Alyce had obeyed his instructions. Both of them had plenty of daggers buckled around their waists and slid up their sleeves. They had more shiny weapons on their persons than rich, old-fashioned jewellers.
"Good," Varmer said, eyeing both of them. "Leo, did Alyce tell you what you and she are going to do?"
Leo nodded, pushing back the long sleeves of his black cloak. "Yeah, she said that I'm going to communicate with the rebels and ask them to surrender so prevent the loss of life and so on and so forth."
Varmer nodded. "Alyce, I want you to go with him. That way, I can communicate with you easier and quicker than just with him. Is that clear?"
"Perfectly clear, my lord," Alyce said, nodding as she pushed her auburn ponytail off her shoulder.
Varmer briefly considered sending more magicians. Even though both Alyce and Leo were extremely powerful, they were both Magicians of Water and it would be risky sending them without a different type of magician.
He could send Tia or Zara with them; both were Magicians of Fire and extremely powerful. But after Linden's betrayal, he was finding it extremely hard to trust Zara and since Tia was her sister, it was doubtful if her loyalty would be to him or to her. Another option would be sending Darius, but since the Magician of Earth had previously been on Arulan's side in the war, him going could either be in Varmer's favour or in Arulan's. Darius going could either throw the rebels completely off balance or he could break free from Varmer's control and return to Arulan's side.
That meant that he could not send any of those three. Apart from Leo and Alyce, he could send Bradley, but he didn't have offensive magic like Zara did. It was somewhat risky but it seemed like he would have to send them alone. He was running out of very powerful magicians, thanks to losing Ellie and Benjamin simultaneously.
"Are you going to send anyone else with us?" Alyce asked tentatively when Varmer's pause grew a little long.
Varmer pursed his lips, still thinking about the situation. He didn't want to send Leo and Alyce alone, but there didn't seem to be any other choice. He hesitated, but then the door opened and Zara and Tia entered, both with grim faces and tense expressions, wearing Varmer's trademark black cloaks.
