Chapter 38

"It can't be," Helen cried as her telepathic magic revealed the identity of the person who had just mortally wounded Sapphire.

"Helen, who is it?" Troy asked, a ball of fire already appearing between his fingertips.

Suddenly, Romulus screamed and collapsed on the floor, clutching his heart. Whatever was happening to him was clearly not Sapphire's condition; he would not be foolish enough to distract her from healing herself by faking heartbreak.

                     "Remus!" he shouted. "Brother!"

"Your brother betrayed us?" Troy asked, whirling around to face the Magician of Air, his head moving back and forth to keep both Varmer and the camouflaged figure in eyesight.

Romulus screamed, arching his back, before collapsing into an unconscious silence. With Sapphire's magic consumed with healing her own wound, there was no possibility of healing him to get his answer.

"No, Troy," Helen said, hollowly, her face pale. "Romulus and Remus are twins. Romulus is feeling whatever Remus is and, judging from Romulus's reaction... Remus is dead or dying."

                     "Helen, watch out!" Jenna screamed.

Just in time, Jenna threw up both hands and a bubble of protection appeared around the three girls: Dahlia, Helen and Sapphire. The weapon that had stabbed Sapphire bounced off the shield. Sparks flew, but her magic held; it was a physical shield, not a feeble ice one like the one Sapphire had tried to summon.

The camouflaged figure spun on the other three defenceless creatures: Tamarak, Raven and Romulus, all of whom were also incapable of protecting themselves. Another bubble of protection appeared; Jenna's arms shook with concentration as her teeth dug into her bottom lip, deep enough to draw blood. Troy pushed her behind him, his sword in one hand and a ball of fire in the other.

"Varmer, stop this madness," Troy growled. "Pick your champion!"

"I have," Varmer said snootily. "He is my champion. Who's yours?"

Troy gritted his teeth. He had no choice but to step forward. The four unconscious, dying or dead were in no condition to fight and Helen and Dahlia were preoccupied with trying to help Sapphire heal herself so that she could fix them next. Jenna had to protect the six of them from danger... which left him.

"Me," he said grimly. "Now stop camouflaging yourself and fight me like a man!"

A familiar voice chuckled, making Troy freeze in his tracks.

"Now what's the fun in that?" the traitorous Magician of Earth sneered.

"Cedric?" Troy gasped, his jaw dropping open as the Magician of Earth lowered the hood of Luna's camouflage cloak, solidifying his outline and revealing his body.
