Chapter 18
Arulan was frozen in shock and terror and, judging from the looks on his companions' faces, there were as stunned and horrified as he himself was. Even though all of them knew that Varmer could heal Hunter if he so wanted, they also knew that Varmer would not. Hunter had nothing that Varmer wanted which he could not get from Dahlia or Tamarak.
Hunter's life could not even be used a blackmail against the rebels. All of them cared for him, but none of them had any attachments to him the way that Troy had for Dahlia or Sapphire had for Tamarak. Hunter's life was expendable and all of them, Varmer included, knew that.
For a split second, Arulan wondered if that had been Hunter's purpose of getting himself killed. He had not known Hunter extremely well, but he, along with some of the others, including Luna, Troy, Dahlia and Kayla herself, had known that Hunter was violently in love with Kayla. It had not helped that Kayla had never shown any particular affection towards him; despite their messy lives, she had constantly remained in love with Benjamin throughout both of their lives and now their deaths.
Had Hunter known that he was expendable? He must have known that in order to convince Dahlia to talk, Varmer would have had to torture her friends in front of her in order to get information. But he could also have killed one of them for he would only have needed one of them to get her to spill the beans. Had Hunter known that by giving up his life, he would spare Tamarak's and therefore, save Sapphire's heart? Arulan did not know.
But he did know whatever happened now, at least Dahlia and Tamarak's lives had been spared for another day; Hunter's sacrifice had given them that.
Although most of the others were silent and shocked, Luna was nearly hysterical with her tears and pain. He could not quite understand it for she had not been particularly close to the Magician of Earth.
Then she gasped out, "I tried to get you to stop..." in the midst of her tears and Arulan realized in a flash that she had known what had been about to occur, that Hunter would die if Troy had answered the pendant's call. Bile rose in his throat and it took all of his self-control not to throw up.
Just when Arulan thought that he had his stomach under control, Helen puked everywhere, her face as green as Sapphire's was white. The Magician of Fire was shaking uncontrollably to the point of collapsing. It took a split second for Arulan to realize that she was sharing Luna's pain; her telepathy was not under control and Helen could do nothing to stop the flood of emotions that were spilling out of Luna's core.
"Sapphire!" Romulus's voice was panicked as she crumpled in his arms, unconscious, finally knocked out by the various shocks of the day. The possibility of Tamarak dying and having to betray his memory by kissing Romulus had caught up on her and she had fainted. At least she wasn't feeling any pain at the moment.
Troy turned to stare blankly at Romulus, before finally putting together the fact that Sapphire really needed help. With a grunt, Romulus swung her body up into his arms, lifting her off the floor and cradling her against his chest.
"Get the door," Romulus gasped.
Troy was supporting Helen who was still retching everywhere, gagging and coughing. Raven was trying to reason with Luna who was still sobbing uncontrollably; she was finally acting her age, which was seven. Arulan sympathized with her, Troy, Dahlia, Helen and Raven; they had been forced to grow up far too quickly for his liking.
