It was the first month of the year and Althea just turned eighteen. She should be celebrating it with friends and family. With all the curtsies; she should be happily dancing in a cotillion, bundled in satin and petticoats, thinking that, that day marks the start of the certain change in her life, like all eighteen year olds think. But it's not, because the next morning she'll wake up and realize that not much was changed. Yes she's older, old enough to vote, to be sent to jail if necessary, or to drive, but still too young to leave her parent's nest and live alone or be free.

Althea's eighteenth birthday wasn't celebrated that way, her mark of maturity didn't leave her in the morning, and her eighteenth birthday was a travesty. It happened on a Sunday while all the maids in the house were busy preparing for a family luncheon and a private dinner party. Althea was summoned by her mom, in her study room; her mom was a well-known lawyer, who had won all the cases she'd handled, she's always been prim and proper, uptight and straight to business talk when she's around her clients but she's just a typical mother when she's at home.

"Mom you called me?" I asked as I awkwardly stood by the door watching her sign the papers for the firm. She looked at me with a sad smile and I knew something was out of place.

Her eyes have always been expressive, like mine she said. And even if she would always deny it I've already memorized her expressions and mannerisms. I knew her like the back of my hand; and knowing all her flaws just made me love her and respect her more.

"Have a seat my dear Althea." She softly said, trying to control her voice, I just simply obliged and walked towards the chair in front of her busy desk.

"Right, too formal mom." I tried teasing but she just gave me another weak smile and nod.

"You're starting to scare me." I added as I sat in front of her.

"What did I tell you about being scared?" she asked tenderly her eyes were glistening

"To try and over turn what scares me because it's all in my head." I answered her 5th grade pep talk when I would compete with higher years for quiz bees.

"Now dear, before I tell you what I need to tell you I want you to over turn your thoughts and widen your understanding about the things that are meant to happen..."

"What are you trying to say mom?" I raised an eyebrow bothered by her warnings

"Althea..." She stalled looking away and clenching her fists under the table

"Mom, it's okay, I think you should be the one who needs to over turn your thoughts..." I said nervously chuckling and she smiled and shook her head in response.

"You need to start talking to me as an adult mom, I just turned 18 remember? I haven't blown the candles yet but - - okay tell me now, I'm really just blabbering." I gave up the small talk

"Althea, my dear one, look at me..." She pleaded as if her life depends on me so I did.

"Yes mom, I'm listening..."

"Okay, our family has a secret, a certain secret that revolves around you..." she paused as she assessed my expression but I tried hard to hold it all inside but each pound of my heart blurs my concentration and I know it's not a good thing.
