Her eyes snapped open.
The fluorescent light hanging above her was blinding, but only for a split second. Her breathing was rapid, a pace so fast that it caused the heart monitor to speed up rapidly.
She was scared.
What was happening?
Where was she?
Who was she?
She was hooked up to wires and tubes and her head had some sort of weird mask over her mouth.
She was panicking.
Doctor's then raced in, a small alert going off that her heart monitor was speeding up.
"She's awake" one doctor breathed in awe, his eyes wide as he stood in his place for a good 10 seconds. And then his instincts kicked in.
A nurse took the oxygen mask from her mouth, and she started freaking out even more then she already was. She spazzed out, unable to control her breathing and unable to call for help because her throat was so dry.
"Calm down sweetheart, it's okay" a woman nurse tried to soothe her.
"We're here to help you okay?"
She was crying. She didn't realize that in the midst of her panicking, she had began to cry. A couple nurses were holding down her arms and steading her legs. One of them was still broken and on the way to healing.
"Breathe with me darling. Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out" the nurse was trying to calm her. She knew that. But she didn't really know what was going on. Everything was happening so fast that she wasn't sure of anything at all.
So she tried to listen to the friendly-seeming nurse.
"That's it sweetheart. Breathe in, breathe out. Everything is going to be just fine"
She listened to the nurse, not sure if anything at all would be fine, but she needed answers to what was going on around her, and to her.
When she had managed to calm down, and he didn't need to be restricted by anyone anymore, the friendly woman nurse helped her sit up, and helped her drink a fresh glass of water.
The water slid down her throat, and it slightly stung. She was so parched, so thirsty. She hadn't drunken anything in so long. She hadn't talked in seemingly, forever.
Once she was finished, the nurse set down the glass, as all of the other nurses worked around her, and helped to rearrange some wires and tubes and bandages, as the doctor started looking at some X-rays.
"What's going on?" she spoke. She spoke for the first time in four months.
Her voice was still slightly hoarse, but she could still manage to utter a few words.
"Hunny, I need you to tell me the last thing that you remember" the nurse said to her instead of answering her question.
"The last thing I remember?" she repeated, and the nurse nodded at her.
"I- I don't remember anything"
The nurse's eyes slightly widened, "What? Are you sure? Nothing at all?" the nurse wanted to see how far back the girl's memory went.
She shook her head, "No. The last thing I remember is.... is walking down the stairs of a house... my house I think, because my mom had called me to meet some new people that we were having for dinner"
"Do you remember who these people were?" the nurse pressed.
She shook her head again, "Some new neighbors, I think. I'm not sure. I don't remember who they are" she told the nurse, leaning back against the bed slowly.
She then began to cough violently, and the nurse then left to get her another glass of water, leaving her in the white room by herself.
She looked around, fiddling with her finger's silently, noticing something on her left wrist.
"L.H.?" she whispered to herself, tracing over the unfamiliar letters that occupied the skin on her left wrist.
And then the door suddenly opened, and she looked up.
A tall boy, one that had blonde hair, blue eyes, and a black lip piercing, stood at the door, a drink in his hand. He looked up from the device in his hand, and his eyes met hers.
And he dropped the plastic cup.
The condiments spilling across the floor.
"B-B-Broo....-Brooklyn?" he whispered, his eyebrows furrowing together, not quite believing what he was seeing. He took a step forward, stepping over the puddle of coffee on the ground, and then he rushed to her side, wrapping his arms around her, hugging her so tightly, that it caused her to panic again.
She struggled to get him off of her, wanting to scream for help, but her throat hurt her too much.
"Get off of me!" she managed to beat at his chest enough times for him to get the message and back away from her.
"Brooklyn?" he whispered her name again, and raised his hand out to gently cup her cheek, but she flinched away from him and slapped his hand away from her.
"Who the f*ck are you?! Don't touch me!" she scooted away from him, as much as she possibly could, which wasn't much considering the fact that she was on a twin sized bed and her muscles and bones still hurt from being inactive for the past four months.
"What? It's me" the boy gestured to himself, and he smiled smally at her, hoping that she was just joking with him.
But she wasn't.
"What the f*ck are you doing in here?" she looked at him with wild and scared eyes, not knowing who this man was. What he was doing in her room.
"It's me. Luke"
She shook her head, still not knowing him, his name not ringing any bells.
"I-...I'm your neighbor. Your best friend....your boyfriend. It's me, Luke" he began to panic, it was evident in his voice how he was beginning to get scared.
"You remember me, don't you?"
"Sorry, I've never seen you before in my life"
