The next day, Natasha skipped school just to stay with Clint at the hospital. In fact, she planned to do so everyday until he was discharged, just to make him feel better and not so lonely, she thought.

When Natasha pushed open the door to the ward, Clint was just lying there staring at the ceiling.

She almost startled him when she slipped her hand into his and sat down on the bed.

"Tasha? What are you doing here? You should be at school."

"I came to keep you company. School's not as important compared to you." She gave him a warm smile.

She hoped what she said would lift his spirits. However, she caught a frown on Clint's face even though it faded as soon as it came, as if he was trying to hide it.

"School is important. You shouldn't be neglecting it because of me. You should go back." His reply was cold and unfeeling, and it surprised Natasha.

"I thought you'd be lonely..." Her smile faded and she looked away from him.

"I'm perfectly fine by myself." Came a curt reply.

"I already called in sick this morning so I've got no reason to be going back...I'll stay just for today, and go back to school like you wanted tomorrow, okay?" She asked hopefully.

Clint nodded so briefly that Natasha almost didn't catch it.

An air of awkwardness settled between the two of them, the silence slowly building up the tension. It was like an elastic band slowly being stretched, any moment it would snap.

Clint continued staring at the ceiling while Natasha stared out the window trying to lay her eyes on hopefully something interesting.

The silence was temporary broken by Clint clearing his throat. Natasha took it as a hint and stood up to pour him a cup of water before offering it to him.

Clint tried to sit himself up but struggled, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the handles by the bed too tightly, channelling all his energy to his arms.

Natasha set the cup of water down on the bedside cabinet and helped Clint up, with one hand behind his back and another supporting his arm.

Their faces were only inches away, but Natasha was busy propping up the pillow and making sure Clint was comfortable, and didn't notice Clint staring at her with a dash of tears hanging precariously on the edge of his eyelids.

Clint felt utterly helpless, useless and worthless. He couldn't even sit up by himself and needed Natasha to help him. And with the thought that that was how the rest of his life was going to be like, he couldn't help but let loose a few angry, frustrated and indignant tears.

But he blinked them away the moment Natasha turned towards him and held the cup of water to his lips.

"I can do it myself. My hands aren't disabled." Clint almost spat those words at Natasha and she was taken aback, if not hurt a little.

He grabbed the cup from her and spilled a little water on his clothes. Natasha quickly tried to dab it dry with a tissue. Clint snapped at her again.

"Stop treating me like I'm useless, I can do things myself!" With that, he snatched the tissue from her and began to dry his clothes.

Natasha withdrew almost unnoticeably.

She was hurt that Clint didn't appreciate her time and company and yet had been so hostile to her. But even more, she was hurt that he was feeling like that about himself and refusing any help.

"You should go." Clint said, barely audible under his breath.

Natasha glanced at Clint, hoping he would relent, but he didn't, his face steely and forbidding as before.

She stood up quietly, fingers wrapped around one another, as she shuffled towards the door.

She stopped after opening the door halfway and looked back at her boyfriend.

"I'll come again tomorrow." She said meekly.

"Don't." Was all Clint said but Natasha had already closed the door behind her.

He watched the flash of red hair disappear down the corridor from the small window in the door and wondered whether he was doing the right thing.
