Warm rays kissed their faces as the morning approached. Clint woke up first while Natasha was still sleeping soundly.
Natasha's head was resting snugly in the crook of his shoulder, his warm breath fanning her forehead, while hers on his neck. Clint had one hand cupping Natasha's cheek and hers gripped his wrist gently.
She didn't stir even when he kissed her forehead. Clint lay there very still and felt the rhythm of her heartbeat on his chest. It was relaxed and slow-paced, and matched that of his.
Even though Natasha said she didn't blame him for being unable to protect her, Clint couldn't help but feel bad about it. If he was going to stay by her side like he promised, he needed to find a way to protect her. But he was limited in his movements by his wheelchair. He had to find another way, perhaps the only way was to leave for a while and allow him time and space to sort out his thoughts. He wasn't leaving forever, of course, he would come back for her and fulfill his eternal promise to her.
Because he loved her way too much to leave her forever.
Clint was lost in his thoughts until soft kisses up his neck brought him back to reality.
He looked down and saw beautiful emerald orbs, the same ones that enthralled him since the first time they met, staring back at him lovingly.
"Good morning." He rubbed his thumb down her cheek.
"Good morning." She replied, in that endearing sleepy morning voice, with a smile.
Clint kissed her nose.
"Is your arm dead?" Natasha said with a chuckle, referring to the one she was lying on.
Clint tried to wiggle his arm from underneath her and she sat up, helping him up as well.
Clint suddenly wrapped that arm round Natasha's neck and pulled her in for a kiss, then pulled away.
"Nope, not dead." He said with a wink.
Then Natasha suddenly remembered something.
"The State Championship. Are you still competing in that?"
"I don't think I can anymore." Clint said, gesturing to his legs.
"Of course you can! This doesn't affect your accuracy in any way." Natasha said, cheering him on.
Clint sighed.
"Your coach doesn't think you can do it, is that right?"
"Yup, he got that arrogant jerk to replace me." Clint replied sadly.
"Well, I think he's making a very big mistake. He shouldn't look down on you this way." Natasha said, fuming a little.
Clint shrugged, showing his helplessness.
Before Natasha could say another word, Clint started to get off the bed and ask her along for breakfast.
Natasha pulled his wheelchair nearer to the bed and helped him into it. This time he didn't reject her help but gladly accepted it.
Natasha made sunny side up eggs and sausages while Clint waited on the couch.
Then she sat down next to him holding the plate and a fork, and he wrapped an arm round her back.
They sat there laughing and talking while Natasha fed Clint the food.
Clint felt utterly blessed and thoughts about leaving stalled in their advance for the time being.
During their breakfast, they heard the sound of an object smashing onto the ground from one of the bedrooms. Natasha looked to Clint puzzled.
"That's just Hayden. He either stays in his room or the library all day when there's no class." Clint explained and Natasha nodded.
Afterwards, Natasha teased Clint by pretending to feed him a piece of sausage but ended up gobbling it up herself. Clint laughed and said he didn't want anymore food.
"You're full already?"
"Nope, still hungry, but not for breakfast..." He said with a smirk and a naughty glint in his eyes.
The moment Natasha set the plate down on the coffee table, Clint pushed her down onto the couch and...we all know what happened.
Their brief make out session was interrupted abruptly by the sound of someone clearing his throat.
"Err sorry, Hayden." Clint apologised, trying to ease the awkward situation, while Natasha blushed madly next to him.
"It's alright." Hayden replied straight faced, his voice cold and monotoned. His void eyes stared directly at Natasha and she felt the same cold shiver run down her spine.
Then he left the dorm.
---------------------------------------------
That day after Natasha left to hang out with Maria and Pepper, a familiar voice called on Clint as he was heading down the hallway to the canteen.
"Coach, you're looking for me?" Clint asked, the encounter reminding him of his lost opportunity.
"Are you keen on taking part in the State Championship?"
"What?" Clint asked in disbelief, his eyes grew wide. But he quickly composed himself and responded before the coach could say anything.
"I-I mean of course! If-if you'll give me the chance, I'll give my best shot!" Clint replied, stammering with excitement.
"Then you're back on the participants list, young Hawkeye! The target will be lowered to an appropriate height for you, I've spoken with the organizer." The coach replied with as much enthusiasm, and much to Clint's delight that he used his alias.
"Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity, I won't let you down!" Clint said thrilled, as the coach gave him a pat on his back.
As the coach turned to leave, Clint couldn't help but ask him one question, he wasn't sure if he should but he did anyway.
"What made you change your mind, coach?"
"It's more of who. A certain someone came and convinced me on your behalf. She was really determined and persistent too." He said with a slight laugh and left.
