"C'mon, let's get to our seats before it starts!" Natasha said excitedly, pulling Maria and Pepper along while the rest of their friends followed behind into the indoor arena.
"Relax Natasha, the competition doesn't start until 20 minutes later." Steve said, but his words fell on deaf ears as Natasha pushed through the crowd to the seats.
They had gotten the front seats for the best view of the archery competition, thanks to Clint's coach.
"Look, Clint's at the waiting area now!" Natasha said while waving at him. He waved back at her and sent a flying kiss, to which Natasha blushed when the others saw.
The competition was an indoor one, with a standard distance of 18m. The crowds scanned the targets lined up, and most couldn't help but wonder at the second one, which was placed at a lower position than the rest.
"First up, we have Oliver Jonas Queen from DC High." The commentator began.
A guy with short dirty blond hair stepped forward with an ornate black and gold bow. He wore a green uniform and had a confident smirk on his face.
"He seems arrogant." Darcy whispered among the girls. The others agreed while Natasha was still looking in Clint's direction with a hopeful expression on her face.
"Next, we have Clinton Francis Barton from Marvel High."
Clint took a deep breath and wheeled himself out into the competition area, with his double recurve bow and quiver on his lap. The top of his wheelchair had been folded down so he could stretch his arm comfortably. He tried not to focus on the judgmental stares or the looks of disbelief from the surrounding crowds. He only looked at Natasha and his friends, who silently encouraged him.
The commentator then announced the six other competitors and they all prepared for the first end. They had 2 minutes to shoot 3 arrows for each end, in a total of 20 ends.
The whistle blew for the first round and an array of arrows flew past onto the opposite targets, embedding in them with a low thunking sound. This continued till each candidate had shot 3 arrows.
The time was up and all the candidates moved forth to retrieve their arrows and have their scores recorded.
Natasha and their friends cheered when the scores were updated on the board. They found that Clint was already leading with a score of 29, with Queen coming close behind with a score of 28.
Natasha grinned and looked towards Clint. He caught her looking and gave her a quick wink. She returned with a raised thumb, telling him 'good job'.
By the 19th end, Clint had a total score of 550, consisting of three 30s, twelve 29s and four 28s. Queen wasn't far behind, with a score of 548, consisting of two 30s, fourteen 29s, one 28 and two 27s. Let's just say the rest of the other six competitors were nowhere as competent.
Queen glanced at Clint, with a look of dismay. He couldn't believe this guy in the wheelchair was so...he found it hard to say, but good. He could see his fellow supporters getting a little doubtful of him after seeing him only coming in second so far, they weren't cheering anymore. No, my famed title of Green Arrow, the best, must remain. I can't let some dumb disabled guy beat me, he thought.
The competitors were all getting ready for the final end when Tony had to go to the toilet. He stood up but Pepper grabbed him.
