That evening Nicki had asked Garvin to ask the kids if they hurt Prodigy and Roc Royal and he'd gotten nothing out of them. So she decided to ask them herself, starting with the most likely suspect, Jade.
Nicki had Jade sitting on her bed in her room. They were facing each other crosslegged on Nicki's bed.
"Do you know why I called you in here Jade?" Nicki asked solemnly.
"Em . . . you want to know if I made Prodigy and Roc Royal lose their voices?" Jade asked taking a calculated guess. From the way the therapist questioned her earlier she knew that both he and Nicki thought that she did it.
"Uh . . ." Nicki didn't expect Jade to hit the nail right on the head like that. But then again the kid was a genious. "Yes that's exactly it. Now did you do it? And how did you do it?"
Jade blinked. She knew that if there was reason to believe that the boys were abused in such a manner it was only common sense to think of her self as the instigator but somehow she felt a bit hurt that everyone thought it was her. She hated the fact that she was the way she was and now that everyone knew what she was it was getting harder to put it all behind her. She just wanted to be as perfect as possible. "No I didn't do it . . . as hard as it is to believe." Jade mumbled. In a way she wished she was the one to cause them so much pain but she really didn't do it.
Nicki raised an eyebrow. Jade had tried to lie to her before and she really couldn't tell if she was lying this time. "Jade I need you to be completely honest with me. The boys can't talk and seem to be terrified of me finding out what happened. Just tell me what you did to them please." Nicki pleaded.
Jade gulped. She was telling the truth. She knew that Nicki wouldn't believe her though because she was a lier. She'd already screwed up. She'd already said too much. And now the person who she wanted to love her most in the world was looking at her like she was a hazard to the household. And the fact that she was right made Jade's stomach flip. She was suddenly angry at herself for being incorrigible in her violent tendencies. She was supposed to be smarter than this. She was supposed to be better than this. And now her mother was begging her to admit to a crime she didn't commit. Jade started grinding her teeth in frustration. "It wasn't me! I didn't do it okay." She said feeling like she was being burnt alive under Nicki's worried and almost afraid gaze.
"Jade . . . I know that you would never hurt me but . . . Prod and Roc, I know you don't like them. They say a lot of things that get on your nerves so I can understand you wanting to make them stop talking . . . but whatever you did it wasn't cool."
Jade's anger towards her ownself was beginning to boil. How could she let her new perfect life get to a point where she was being accused this way? She was supposed to be starting over and leaving mean Jade behind. She knew that it would always bite her back hard in the ass. "Mam . . . I'm being completely honest when I say it wasn't me! I mean come on! I would never be stupid enough to do something that would alert everyone that something was wrong. If I wanted to hurt those bozos you would never know! Whoever did this clearly was a bit out of control when they did it. But they'd also have to be determined too. They'd probably have to mix vinegar and maybe limes or lemons together and chuck it down their throats to burn them like that! It wasn't me!" Jade stood. She needed to release her pent up frustrations but she didn't know what to do.
"Jade calm down!" Nicki yelled becoming careful as Jade looked so angry. "You've got to admit that you just perfectly described how to make them lose their voices." Nicki said a bit guardedly.
Jade became rigid. "I didn't do it." She said through her teeth. She couldn't believe that she just slipped up like that; telling how to carry out the crime exactly. She was a disgrace to her IQ. She needed to get out of there. "If you don't believe me then that's too bad. I'm going to me room." Jade stalked off and slammed the door behind her.
