Chapter 20
The crackling of the fire outside made Anjela's heart race. Everything in the cabin was starting to heat up inside and nobody seemed to notice until a couple minutes ticked by. Logan stirred awake and sat up on the couch, his eyes clouded with confusion.
"What's that burning smell?" he asked, rising up. "It smells like pine trees,"
"That's because the forest is on fire!" she hissed in panic before running from the window to wake her mother.
She turned the knob and opened the door to reveal her mother sleeping peacefully on an old bed, the old curtains on the window blocking the orange glow from the fire that got closer to them. She walked over and shook her, almost violently, causing her steady breathing to turn into an abrupt snort. Her mother's eyes fluttered open and looked around the room until they're eyes met.
"What's going on? And what's burning?"
"The forest," she replied quickly before heading towards the door, "Get your stuff now."
And with that she left the room, leaving her mother to pack whatever she could.
Back in the main room, Logan was helping Linda get up to her feet, the old wolf's face bright with fear.
"F-fire!" she barked, staring behind Anjela, "The cabin's burning!"
Anjela spun around to see she was right. The walls near the door had caught fire, smoke starting to fog the whole place.
"It's going to be okay," Logan soothed, "We just have to get out of here as soon as possible."
Anjela brushed past them and started to gather the books she checked out, making sure she had all three. She didn't want them to be burned or destroyed; they were like her teacher to be part wolf. Once they were packed safely in the bag, she closed it and rushed over to Logan to help his grandmother. She gave Linda a gentle shove towards the back door.
"Take her through there," she instructed, "It's not safe for us to go through the other one,"
He nodded briefly before leading his grandmother away. The fire grew and every breath Anjela took, it seemed bigger than before. It was spreading throughout the cabin; fast.
"Oh," her mother complained as she exited the bedroom with worry on her face, "I'll have to leave all of my stuff behind. It's too much of a drag to carry." She sighed before glancing at Anjela's bag, her eyes sparked with a glint of hope.
"Unless you can carry some things," she suggested, putting her index finger to her chin.
"No time Mom," she growled, "Let's-"
Before she could finish, the walls started to give way and the roof creaked, giving a sign to both of them that it was about to collapse. Panicking, Anjela grabbed her mother's arm and yanked her to the backdoor. She then shoved her out of the cabin before everything started to fall, fire and debris clouding Anjela's view.
"No!" her mother cried from outside, "Don't take my baby!"
Wood was pinning Anjela's foot down, making it hard for her to escape. Amazingly, everything that was above her didn't crush her, at least not yet. Anjela transformed in her wolf and managed to free her foot that was now a paw, only scratching it on the wood. She then ran for it and burst out back into the blazing mess where her mother stood, tears starting to stroll down her face. She looked up and her eyes widened in surprise.
"You're alive!" she breathed with relief.
"Come on," Anjela rasped, "Let's get out of here."
They both began sprinting in the woods, nothing but ashes and lit trees surrounding them. It was almost blinding. In the distance, Anjela could hear a couple yelps of pain. But then she became distracted when her mother burst in a fit of coughs, each one agonizing for her to hear.
