My feet kicked over the side of the couch while I attempted to rub the sleep out of my eyes. For some strange reason I could tell that it was early in the morning. The cold morning air circled around the house from outside, waiting for a door to be opened so it could swoop in.
As usual, it took me a moment to process everything and to realize that I was the only one, besides a sleeping Steven, left on the couch from the previous night, hinting that Emmie and Caiden must've gone to their rooms at some point.
"Yes they're home," I suddenly heard Emmie's muffled voice say from across the hall where the front door was.
"I need to have a word with your parents," a low, raspy male voice replied. "Could I come in?"
My motherly instincts kicked in at the thought of some random man coming into our house with Emmie being so close by. I quickly stood up, running down the hall and to the front door where a police officer stood. Relief flooded through me to see that it was a police officer until I realized that he had to be here for a reason.
"Oh I'm sorry, sir..." I started, my sentence trailing off because of my drowsiness. "I didn't hear you ring the doorbell. What can I do for you?"
"I'm sorry for coming around so early in the morning, but due to all of reports of missing people lately, we advise you to in your house or to really keep an eye out for mysterious people or happenings," he man said, clapping his hands together once at the end before looking down at Emmie. "Which means no school for you today!"
"Thank you for stopping by, officer," I said, a smile smile on my face.
"No problem at all. I assure you we will be figuring out what has been going on," the police officer said, before we exchanged our goodbyes.
Emmie turned around and yawned. "I'm going back to bed," she mumbled before shuffling up the stairs and into her bedroom.
I chuckled at how out of it she always was in the mornings and made my way back into the living room where Steven was still asleep on his back. Still tired myself, I crawled onto the couch and cuddled up close to Steven, his arms instantly wrapping around me. A small smile creeped across my face as I nuzzled my face into the crook of his neck, his chin resting on too my my head.
"Mmm," I happily sighed before slowly falling back asleep to the sound of his constant heartbeat.

"Where the hell is it?!" I asked, anger present in my tone of voice. I had been searching all morning for my wedding ring, but no traces of it were found. "I swear I've looked everywhere!"
"Hey," Steven said, his tone much softer than mine as he came over to me, putting one around around my waist and the other to my cheek. His thumb slowly ran over my cheek, instantly calming me. "Don't panic Laur, I know we'll find it eventually. You should be spending this one morning that Caiden doesn't wake us up at eight am doing something you would enjoy."
I nodded even though I was confused as to why he was not at least a tiny bit frantic. Guilty was all I felt. Steven had spent tons of money on that ring, and I lost it. "Okay," I sighed.
"Now give me kiss." A grin spread across my face at his words, and I fulfilled his wish with a simple kiss.
Simple, but loving.
