We drive slowly through the gates of Dolanstown Stud. Sarah and the gang take me out of the truck and they unpack everything. Sarah and Leona are proud. They stick me in my stable. It looks like Sean prepared the bedding and feed for me. I'm not even that hungry. My adrenaline is still high after my successful win. All the humans were out of the barn and gone to bed. 'Well done Scooter!'. Glic chants. All the other horses join in. I thank them all. 'Oh my god, Scooter! Seeing you past that finish line just a tad-bit ahead of The Sky Princess was awesome!'. Kandy says to me excitedly. She's jumping around her stable like any other foal. 'How do you guys know that?'. I ask curiously. 'Well done Kandy we wish you never knew'. Cara says angrily. Muffin opens his stable door and uncovers a T.V that was smuggle in the straw. 'Muffin has pointy lips, so he can switch the T.V on and off, and change the channel'. Glic says happily. Muffin walks back into his stable, shuts the door and stands proudly. He's a very cheeky pony.
'That's not the way a proper race horse wins any race'. Glic sticks her head out of the top of the door. 'Who said that?'. She commands. A horse that looks a bit like me but his white sock is on his right and he has a circular star, sticks his head out the stable door. 'You would have been well able to win that race!'. He says grumpily. 'How do you know?.' I ask him. I was feeling defensive. 'I used to be a race horse back in my racing days'. He says sadly. 'Farmhill Flyer. That was my racing name'. He says staring at thin air. 'What is your name sir?'. I ask politely. 'That I won't answer'. He says quickly. 'You want to win the Grand National Steeplechase. Don't you?'. He says with no interest. 'Yes'. I say quietly. 'No, you don't want to win!'. He shouts. 'I do'. I say speaking louder. 'No you don't!'. He shouts even louder. 'Yes... I... Do!'. I shout. I'm getting annoyed. My teeth are baring. 'That's more like it'. He says with sweet tone to his voice. 'You see Scooter, I could see you were scared out on that track. You weren't telling that mare that this is your race. You've got to tell them out on that track that this is your race!'. He shouts again. I was scared. I was scared something would happen. Something would happen to me or Sarah. The both of us maybe. 'Yes I understand. Your a mare. You would be protective. But you also got to think of the race'. He says smartly. 'Meet me tomorrow in the field. I'll train you to be a proper racer'. He commands. 'Yes sir'. I say quietly. The barn goes quiet.
The morning came. The sun was rising and the sky was a beautiful pink and purple colour. Today is going to be a brilliant day. I'm out grazing on the green grass. The horse that I met last night came up to me. 'Right, you see them two trees on either end of the field. I want you to race around that one and gallop to other and the same thing'. He says carefully. 'Got it!'. I say fastly. I start at a canter then into a gallop. I gallop as fast as I can. My legs stretching as far as they can go. I'm nearing the tree. I race around the tree. Staying as tight as I can to the old trunk. Once around the ancient tree, I push with my hindlegs to accelerate. I'm galloping by the horse who is training me in the middle of the field. I'm nearing the other tree now. Oh no! I can't slow down. As I'm almost around the tree, I lose my balance and a slip onto my side. Ouch!
'Hahahaha! I've never seen such a fail in my life'. The horse laughs. 'Yeah! Yeah! Laugh all you like. I would have made that simply. I just... made...a...mistake'. I say embarrassed. 'Yes. It's good you know what went wrong, but you had to think on the spot. You had no time at all think it through. You would have had no time to think it through during a race. So! You always think ahead when racing. Always think about when you take off, where your placing your own feet. All other things that could make you do a mistake'. He says full of detail. Wow! This horse talks no trash. 'Yes sir'. I say to him. I feel stupid. I thought it would have been easy but, no. 'Oh ye! Scooter! My father told me, use the figures around you'. He says clearly. What does he mean. I hate riddles! Mother told me a lot. I still don't get them. 'So then, I'll see ya tomorrow here at the same time'. The horse chants. Man. That horse I just don't understand. He won't tell me his name. Why?
I go back to Glic and Sammy who are grazing happily beside eachother. That's what I do for the rest of the day.
