Sarah's P.O.V.
''I know Scooter. I feel it too. You're not the only one. Please sweetie. Will you continue to race with me?''. I ask the heartbroken mare. She looks shocked. I decide to stand back and open the door wider. ''Go think about it. Get some air.'' I advice her. The mare looks at me. She races out of the stable door and out of the barn. I look at her as she leaps over the fences and into the forest. Oh Scooter. I'm so sorry. Please. I need you. You're the one.
I walk into the stables again. I see the horses staring at me in shock. Yes guys. I let her run off uncontrollably. Sorry. ''Yeah. Yeah. I know guys. Go easy on her. Her mother is dead.'' I look over at Leona's gelding's stable. He isn't interested. Why don't I know his name? Leona doesn't either. He's beautiful. He looks like Scooter. His coat is lighter though. He has a star. It's not in a perfect shape like Scooter's. It more of just a dot. I realise that I'm staring at him. He has a pretty eye. He just shows a bit of stubbornness. I wonder why he is here? Leona I don't think works him. He's old too. I stop looking and admiring the big gelding and I continue on down to the door. I open the old wooden door. It creaks open on its hinges. I walk in slowly. I admire all of the rosettes, cups, pictures of my mother and Ballycomclone, I walk over to her racing saddle. It's very pretty. The saddle has a black leather seat. The leather saddle flaps are red. The stirrup leathers are black. The girth is a red and black racing girth. I look at the bridle that is hanging uselessly on a hook. I look at it. It is all black. The reins are red at the end of them. The bit is a snaffle bit. It has soft white cushions on the cheekpiece of the bridle. My mother was a good rider. She picked the right horse. The right time. She also was very, very proud of her tack. I feel the seat of the saddle. When was the last time this was greased. It's as hard as rock. I turn around and I see the picture of my mother and Ballycomclone. They are standing in the Aintry Parade Ring. My mother holds a cup. I remember that day. She galloped to the finish with no helmet. She loved to race with no helmet. She won that day by eleven lengths. Ballycomclone gave his best. They raced to the finish line. My mother fist lumping the air and patting the gelding. I look at the picture. My dad is standing on the right, holding Ballcomclone's reins. I stand with Leona and Sean on his left. We all smile widely at the cameras. My mother sits tall and bright on the gelding. She smiles at the camera. I miss that smile. A smile she would wear everyday. I look away from the picture. I stare up at the clock. I remember Scooter. She hasn't returned yet. It is now two o'clock. How long have I been standing here? I notice a tear.
I ring Leona that evening. I tell her everything. Scooter's mother. Scooter still not being back yet. It is now six o'clock. ''I don't know Leona. I'm worried. I guess she doesn't want to race anymore''. I say worried. ''She'll be back. Don't worry. I better go. Oh yeah! You should use that that tack. It would look epic on Scooter''. Leona says. ''Okay. I'll see ya tomorrow. Bye''. I say then I hang up. I take out an old tape. I stick it in the T.V. that I found in the straw. I bet ya it was Sean. Even though Muffin was looking at me guiltily. I play the tape. It plays the race that my mother won. I look at it in awe.
Scooter's P.O.V.
I race into the barn. Sarah is sitting in the straw looking at a tape. The horse is racing to the finish. I listen to the tape. ''It is Ballycomclone racing to finish line using all of the fuel he's got left! He races with jockey Lizzie Doherty! Ah yes! She takes off her helmet and throws it into the crowd. She fist pumps the air! What a spectacular performance from this legendary pair! She crosses the finish line! She is this years winner of Crabbies Grand National!''. The commentator shouts with excitement. Sarah looks behind. She sees me standing at doorway. She gets up slowly and stands still. We stare at eachother quietly. ''Scooter will you race with me. Will we carry on with our dream. Will we be together and support eachother. You have a choice''. Sarah says quietly. I look at Glic. Glic is expressionless. I look back at Sarah. ''Dolanstown. My mother told me that a legend can be born. She was one of them. She was a good horse. I thought about it with her. We were close for one last time. She died thinking about me and her life, that she said that was the best. Why? She said she never thought that her daughter would make it or make her promise happen. It didn't happen though. This is just the beginning. When you start to run. You think about continuing on to run. You can't stop now. You're only jogging. You have to keep going. You have to reach your full potential. You have to sprint and look on to see your future. Sarah Doherty. I will race with you. I will live with you. My dream just began. The race began. I'm only jogging. I need to sprint. I beed to see my future. Just like my mother. She sprinted to her future, which was death. I will race. No matter who or what gets in my way. I was told to Race With the Wind. I can only gallop on to see that happen''. I say to the girl. It's like she got every word I said. She spread her arms out. I walked up to her and I gave her a hug. ''I love you''. She whispers. I will continue with you. You're the best person I have ever met. Nothing will stop the magnet that connects us together.
