Race With the Wind

Chapter 37

I see Sir walk away from me with Amanda. I look over at Cara. She looks over at Sir worried. I start to worry too. I don't know what this girl is like. I don't know what she is doing with Sir. I put my head down and graze.

Cara walks up to Glic. Glic pins her ears back. Glic is making sure Cara doesn't bite me again. I look at where she bit me. My coat is growing back over the wound. I continue to graze. ''Something's not right Glic?''. Cara asks. Glic looks over at the stables. She walks up to the gate. We walk behind her. She stands by the gate and looks at the stables. She examines it. Cara looks at Glic worried. I do too. ''Crap! Do you think she really thought he was me and that she is tacking him up!''. I say scared. Cara looks at me worryingly. I look back at her. Glic looks at Cara. '' Oh no''. Cara whispers as she looks at the stables. Glic and I look over. There is Amanda on the old horses back. Glic curses. Cara starts to hyperventilate. Kandy walks over. ''Guys, that girl is on him''. She says worried. Cara walks up to her and they walk away. I look at Sir. He walks with energy. They enter the gallop. I canter up to fence. They stand still at the finish line. Amanda gives him a ponyclub kick and he leaps into a gallop. He puts his head down. I KNEW IT! He's a racehorse. His feet hit the ground with a thundering sound. He pants and grunts. Amanda pushes him faster and faster. I neigh. Sir speeds up. I get a sickening feeling in my stomach. It all just happens. Like that.

I notice his left knee is not looking good. It is weak. He tenses his back down in pain. His neck muscles are tight. He winces in pain as Amanda kicks him. His leg looks terrible. He has a terrible limp. This horse is suffering from a hamstring injury, terrible back problems and a tight neck muscle. I see it happen. The crack. His neigh of pain. The sand scatters everywhere as he falls to ground. I find myself galloping to the fence that separates us.

''Noo!''. I shout as I jump the barrier that separates us. I land on the sand and gallop to him. Blood everywhere. I stop straight away. Amanda lies on the ground still. She is obviously knocked out. Sean races over to her. He picks her up and places her at a wall. He races back to Sir with a first aid kit. He examines Sir's leg. Sir winces and grunts. Sean takes out his phone. ''Hi Sarah! It's Leona's bay. He had an accident! Broken leg I think! Please come home quickly!''. He says and hangs up. Sean carefully takes off Sir's saddle and bridle and secures a headcollar. Sir still lies on the ground. I nudge him with my nose. He opens his eyes. ''Scooter, I'm okay. I hope. Where's Cara! I want Leona!''. He manages to say. I calm him down. Sean wipes Sir's leg. The wound is big and deep. Sean managed to stitch it up roughly.

After a lot of hassle of getting Sir to his stable, Sarah drives through the gate. Leona races to the stable and Sarah grabs the new horse and gives him or her to Sean. Sarah races to the farmhouse. I've never seen either Sarah or Leona run so fast. Sarah comes back with big first aid kit. She examines his leg. Leona kneels by Sir's head and strokes him. He closes his eyes. Leona's tears hit his face. I manages to pick his head up and lick her face. She sobs. ''I... I'm...sorry Leona...it's severe''. Sarah says softly as she places her hand on Leona's shoulder. Leona nods her head. ''Do it. It's the right thing''. Leona says hoarsely. Leona kisses him. ''I love you, no matter what. I'm glad I get to say goodbye. I will miss you''. Leona says hugging him. Sean helps Leona up. He takes her out of the stable. Sarah goes to grab a needle. I break out of my stable and walk over to him. ''Scooter. I need to tell you something''. He says quietly. ''I'm here Sir''. I say. He smiles at me. ''I knew who you were ever since we met. Do not cry Scooter. I knew who your father was. He was a great racehorse. We raced together and I trained him'''. He says to me. I feel my heart break. He knew who I was. He knew who my father was. I know not a lot about him. ''We were racing in the Grand National together. A relative of The Sky Princess hit him and he fell to the ground. His whole ligament came apart. I stayed back with him. He told me to find his daughter. He told me to send her a message. After that race, my owners didn't want me after what I did. I met Leona then. Please tell Cara I'm sorry and I love her''. Sir explains. I stare into his tired eyes. Glic lets out a weep. I sniffle. I lost my mother, my father. I don't want to loose Sir. Sarah walks into the stable with a needle. She has tears running down her cheeks. She fills the needle up. ''Can I ask you a question Sir?''. I say quietly. ''What's your name?''. I ask sobbing. He smiles. ''My name is Calumbo. I am your uncle Scooter. I knew it when I seen you and Sarah race around the gallop for the first time''. He says. Calumbo. My uncle. Crap! This is a small world. ''What was my father like?''. I ask. ''What is there to say Scooter. It's like he is standing right here in front of me''. Calumbo says. I'm exactly like my father. ''Calumbo. What do you want me to do?''. I ask. Sarah inserts the needle into Calumbo. ''I completed my quest Scooter. I was to tell you,  your father's message. I want you to complete your quest too. Your father told me to tell you this. Scooter....I.....want......you...to...Race With the Wind''. He says. He closes his eyes and I listen to him take his last breath. He stares at me with those bright eyes. He smiles at me. ''Thank you''. I weep. He then closes his eyes and he exhales his last breath. Sarah pats him. Tears rushing down her face. ''I'm sorry boy''. She says to his motionless body. I still stare at his eyes. Remembering those bright eyes he gave me a few seconds ago. This horse is my uncle. Sarah covers his body with a blanket. She blesses him and leaves a few flowers beside the body.

I notice Leona and Cara is gone. They went off for a gallop. I decide to too. I gallop up to the mountain cliff. I see the two girls there. I walk up beside them. Leona buries her face in Cara's mane. She sobs and cries. Cara stares at the ground. I stand beside her. She looks at me. I look at her. This mare hates me. But here at this moment of time, she shows me care. ''I...I'm sorry. For everything''. She says quietly. ''No...I'm sorry''. I say. Cara stares at me. ''He told me that he loves you. He is also sorry''. I say. Cara weeps. ''I love him too. We were a close couple but after that race he shut me out''. She explains. ''He said that, that was my father. Calumbo is my uncle, Cara''. I say weeping. I sob. Cara hugs me. She sobs too. Leona sobs in between the two of us. Leona looks at me as I stare into the starry night. ''I'm sorry''. Cara sobs to me. We all look at the starry night together, remembering a dear friend that was really close to us all. Leona and Cara go back to the stables. I close my eyes and remember the bright eyes that looked me. ''If you want me to do so, okay.... Sir''. I say smiling. I remember the way he ran. His voice. His laugh. I can really hear clearly though is the words he last said. ''Race With the Wind''. He whispers. ''Okay Calumbo. I shall do so. You completed your quest. Now I will complete mine''. I say looking into sky. The wind kisses my face. I know he can hear me. No matter where he is, I know he can hear me.
