Race With the Wind

Chapter 14

The rest of my two weeks was like school. Get up early. Run in the gallops. Jump. Flatwork. Field. Train with Sir. Sarah signed me up for a race. The race is in Fairyhouse. Not far from here. Mother told me about Fairyhouse. She said it was quite a challenge. She won that day. By two lengths. My training with Sarah and Sir is going to come in handy. My jumping improved. My balance improved. My stamina improved. My strength improved too. I have the muscle any racehorse should have. I'm ready for the next race. It's on this weekend. I can't wait to kick some horse ass! I hope I will see Astro and Everest there. That would be cool. Sarah isn't going to do work on me today. I'm put out into the field. I go for a canter around the field for a few laps. I drop onto the damp, frosty grass and I roll. I get up and I walk over to Glic and Sammy. ''Hey guys!''. I say bluntly. The two of them look up and then look at eachother. They look worried. ''What's up?''.Glic ask. ''I'm scared, Glic. I'm angry. I want to know. What does that man want? If it's Sarah, he wants! I will hunt him down! I don't want my life to be ruined now! I don't want Sarah's life to be ruined now!''. I say this with my teeth baring. I feel the heat rise in me. I look at the two, surprised horses. Glic paces up slowly to me. She gives me a hug by she places her head onto my wither. I accept her comforting move. I feel my rage calm down. She says softly to me.''Life doesn't go the way you wish it to be. Scooter, you're my friend. I don't want you to get hurt''. I look at her. She has tears in her eyes. She doesn't want me to hunt this man down. I stare at the ground. ''Sarah is my friend''. I say quietly. ''I want to protect her. I want to protect you. I want to protect this herd''. I say staring into the distance. I decide to walk off. I leave Glic and Sammy standing looking at me as I walk away, disobeying them. ''I'm so sorry. I have more than one quest''. I say to myself. I graze by myself. I feel lonely. Whats gotten into me? I feel a breeze against my face. I walk up a small hill. The breeze is stronger. I hear it whistle in my ears. I hold my head high. I shut my eyes. I let the strong, fresh breeze hit my face. I hear hoofbeats walking towards me. It's Sam. He climbs the hill and stands beside me. ''I know how you feel, Scooter''. He says softly. ''Glic does too. She had to leave her owner. She joined the Gardaí. She also lost her partner''. I don't look up or say anything. ''I also had to give up on my first owner. She just left me. I still remember that day. She...just...left me there. No kisses or hugs goodbye. She couldn't afford to keep me with her. So...she put me in the horse trailer. I was excited. I thought I was going to a hunt, hunter trial, horse show, the Silver Spurs. We stopped. She took me out. Her face blank. No expression. She opened a gate. I didn't know where I was. I walked in the field. I turn around to see what's happening. I turn around to face her. She...was....gone. Already, she was driving off, away from me. I neighed and neighed for her, Scooter. All want right now from her, is...a...kiss. Right in between my two white dots on my nose. I loved it when she did that. You see, Scooter. We all had owners that just left us in a field! Waiting for us to suffer and survive by ourselves''. He says crying. I look up at him. He stares off into the distance. His eyes overflowing with tears. ''All good, old Sammy wants is a goodbye kiss, from the owner he loves''. He says croakily. I couldn't help it. I give him a hug. I'm almost crying. ''I'm so sorry, Sam. I understand. I would have never expected such a thing to happen. But, I have to protect Sarah''. I say over sobs. I stop hugging the heart broken pony. I stare into his little connemara eyes. ''Thank you''. He says quietly. ''I'd better get back to Glic''. He says clearing his throat. I get suspicious. ''What's going on between you two?''. I ask suspiciously. ''Well, I guess I do like her''. He answers shyly. ''That's nice, Sam. I do like her too. She is a very loving horse''. I say with a smile. Sam smiles back. He turns and starts to trot back to Glic. Poor Sam. I wish I didn't act like a bi- you know what I mean. I start to graze again. I start to feel lonely again. I see Glic and Sam grazing beside eachother. I decide to graze with them. I walk over to Glic and Sam. As I pace over to them, Glic looks up. I look at her shamefully. ''I'm sorry''. I apologise. ''Hey, Scooter, I'm not angry. I understand. It's a horses instinct to protect what or who they love''. She answers kindly. I walk up to her and give her a hug. She accepts my hug. We go back to grazing for the rest of the day.

I look up and I see him. Staring at me. The gates. The jeep. The camera. I pin my ears back. He's here. He takes more pictures and writes down notes. ''Glic, he's writing something''. I ask. ''Yeah, I guess it's a timetable of some sort. A schedule''. She answers. I hold my ground. I show hate. I show anger. I show fear. You are not going to get my Sarah. I hear the rumble of the jeep as he turns it on. He puts it into gear and drives carelessly off. My tension is gone. I'm calm now. I look over by the fence. Leona is standing there. She is looking at the gate. She stares at the exact same spot, where the man was parked. She looks over at me. I show my fear. She looks back at me. She shows courage though. She is a very strong girl. She calls me over. I trot over to her. She climbs the fence and sits on it. I come over to her. I place my head in her hands. ''Don't worry, Scooter. Never mind that man. I don't know either. I will make sure he doesn't come back''. She says confidently. I snort in acception. Leona takes us all in. She said Sarah is gone to a special mass. She said it's Sarah's mother's mass. She told me her mother died after a race. She was injured terribly. She died a few hours after the accident in hospital. The horse died on the racecourse. The horse broke his back. He died in shock.

Leona gives me a kiss on my white star. She sticks a rug on me and she leaves the farm. I lie down in the corner of my newly bedded stable and I let sleep overtake me.
