Chapter 13

I wake up by the loud thud of the feed bucket. I stretch my legs out and I get up slowly. Sarah walks in with a smile on her face. ''Good morning, Scooter!''. She says cheerfully. I see her spoon a heaped scoop of hot feed. She walks out of the stable and she closes the door. I walk to the feed bin and I eat my feed slowly. The smell of the sweet beetpulp is delicious.

After eating my feed, I talk to Glic and Sammy. Sarah comes and she tacks me up in a general purpose saddle and bridle. I guess we're going on a hack. She takes me out at a steady walk. The road is quiet. The sound of the birds singing their morning songs is relaxing. I love the fresh country air. I listen to the rhythm of my feet hitting the old country road. Sarah sits relaxed on my back. She is riding with one hand. She looks left and right into the fresh green fields. She seems quiet today. She's usually talking to me. I guess she's tired. She pats and strokes my withers. I let out a long snort. She makes the same noise back. I stare at her. I snort sharply. She does the same thing. I give a small quiet nicker. She tries to copy me, but ends up coughing. I let out a neigh of laughter to her. ''Hey! You're cheating! You know I can't do that. I'm not a horse!''. She says disappointed. There we go! That's the Sarah I know. I just triggered her. She starts to laugh. I see the brightness in her eyes return. She turns me back to direction home.

We arrive back home. Leona's dark blue Range Rover is parked outside the farm house, next to Sarah's red Toyota Hilux. Sarah walks me to the stables and she pulls my tack off. She grabs a halter and leadrope and she secures them onto my head. She leads me to the field where everyone else is. She unclips the headcollar and opens the gate. I gallop down to Glic and Sammy. I fall down on the damp grass and I roll. I flip my body over to the right and left. I rub my head in the damp muck and dirt. I get up and I shake most of it off. I start to munch on a fresh patch of rich, green grass.

Sir comes and he asks me to train after about an hour of me grazing happily. I gallop fast down to the tree. I go around the tree thinking of every step I take. I avoid tangling my legs around eachother. I step forward and I push with my hind legs galloping away from the first tree. Tree number two. Your going down. I gallop past Sir. ''Thats it, Scooter!''. He shouts. I gallop down to the second tree. I do the same thing. I avoid and think of every step I take. I stick tight to the tree trunk. I push with my hind legs. I gallop on and I start bucking and celebrating. I'm improving! I hear everyone neighing happily. I look over at them as I trot to Sir. ''Well! What do ya think?!''. I say to him happily. ''Impressive. But...I was really hoping for you to fall again''. He says cheekily. I start to laugh. Sir joins in to. ''I knew you'd get it kiddo''. He says with a smile. I smile back back at him. I think Sir and I are really alike. We both got a sense of humour. ''Well! Ya coming for a gallop!''. I say excitedly to him. He smiles and he rears up and he leaps into a gallop. I do the same thing. We gallop by Glic and Sammy. The two of them gallop behind us. Kandy and Cara come up behind us. Blacky and Muffin gallop at the back of the herd. We enjoy our day like a normal herd. Everyone is taking and playing. We all start to graze together. Sir is actually part of the herd. I feel joy hit me.

I was in the middle of a patch of grass when I see a black jeep at the top of the drive. I look up alerted. Glic noticed my reaction and she stays still and stares at the jeep alerted too. Theres a bald man in it. He is looking at the farmhouse. He scans the area. He looks at the field I'm in and he stares at me. I feel scared and angry. He smiles at me. I swish my tail and pin my ears down flat on my neck. Sammy starts to play stallion. He walks in front of Glic. Muffin copies him. He stays in front of Cara and Kandy. Kandy seemed terrified when she looked at me. I stood tall holding my ground. Sir walks up behind me. Blacky stands tall too. He stands square halted. The man is still staring at me. He has something in his hand. What is that? It has some sort of circular glass thing on the front of it. It looks like the objects they hold at the races. He starts to point the glass thing at me and he uses a free finger to press a button. He puts the object away after a few minutes and he puts the jeep in gear and he drives off. ''Scooter, he was taking pictures of you''. Glic says worryingly. Thats what that thing was. The objects they use at the race. Crap! I stand at the same spot. Still alerted. Sir walks up to me. ''Scooter. What's going on?''. He says looking at me. I don't look at him. I don't know what to say. ''I...I...don't know. I just... I don't know''. I say confused and frightened. I look over at Cara and Kandy. Kandy walks up to me. She seems teary eyed. ''Scooter, who was that?''. She says shakily. I look at Cara. She looks at me frightened too. I look back at Kandy. ''Now listen Kandy. Don't mind me. Take care of Cara. Okay. Just...stay strong''. I tell her. I give her a little hug. She walks to Cara's side. I look at Glic. She comes up and she hugs me. ''It's okay Scooter. I wish I knew what's going happen. We will all be here for you''. She says strongly. Sammy comes up and he gives me a hug too. The two of them stay by my side for the rest of the evening. I stare at the gate. I look at the spot, where the jeep was. I close my eyes. I open them and stare at the night sky. I look at the North Star. Mother told me everything about it. Oh, mother. If only you can protect me now. She stands like a stallion. Protecting his herd. She stands tall and proud. I'd love to see her at a race. She told me that if you wish hard enough, your wish could come true. I look down. I can't stand thinking about my mother. I miss her. I feel a lump in my throat. I start to sniffle. I feel like crying. I just wish I could see her one more time. ''Scooter!''. I look up. Sarah wants to bring me in. I gallop up to gate. I fall into her arms. Oh, Sarah! I'm so glad your here. Take me to see my mother! Please find out what's happening with that shady man! ''Scooter! What's wrong? Come on I'll take you in. I've got a hot mash ready for you''. She says worryingly. Sarah takes me in. Leona helps her to take in the other horses. I'm given my feed. I gobble it down. I lie down in the corner of the stable and go to sleep. Who was that man? What does he want?
