The jingles to the front door of the store make their sound, causing me to sit up straight, thinking that it's Hanna. "Hello. Are you Michael?" the tall man asks. I furrow my eyebrows at him and sigh, wishing it was Hanna.
"Yeah. Why?" I ask, crossing my arms over my chest. "I'm Hanna's father. Just thought I should talk to the boy that's hanging around my daughter" he says with a shrug.
I nod slowly. "Okay..."
"So...Hanna has been talking a lot about you lately" he chuckles at his own words.
I feel my cheeks turn to a shade of pink at those words. "Since ever her mother died...everything has been horrible for her. It's good that she has somebody else in her life besides me" he coughs out.
"Michae-" my dad cuts himself short and laughs at the man in front of him. "Well isn't it Mr. Monteiro" he laughs. "Isn't is Mr. Clifford" they both stand there with crossed arms and a death stare like they are ready to attack at any second.
"What's going on?" I ask. My dad shoots his head towards me, so does Hanna's dad. "Oh nothing, son. Just looking at my enemy" he turns his head cockily to Mr. Monteiro. "Same here" Mr. Monteiro says.
"I think I should be leaving" he says, already walking towards the door.
"Good idea" I hear my dad say.
As soon as he leaves, I turn to my dad quickly and ask him why they hate eachother, my inner curious childness coming out.
"You don't need to know. Get back to work" he orders, walking out of the room and towards the back.
Later on in the day, I meet Hanna at a lake.
"So our dad's hate eachother?" she asks for the hundreth time already. "I've already told you, Hanna. Yes. They do. Should've seen them today. They looked like they were about to stab eachother in the eyeballs with the pencil I was holding" I shake my head.
"Too much information, Clifford" she says with a chuckle.
We sit in silence for a little while until she speaks up with her booming voice.
"I think we should swim" she suggests. I nod, standing up. "But I don't have my swimming trunks"
"Don't need them" she shrugs, taking her pants off. I quickly turn around and close my eyes. "Come on. I'm in the water already" she calls from behind me. I turn around to see her swimming in the dark brown water. Ew.
I take off my shirt and pants, leaving me in my boxers. "I'm cold, Hanna" I say as I shiver.
"Come in the water then"
I do as she says and hop in, still feeling cold.
I swim over to Hanna but she splashes me before I could reach her. I splash her back, earning giggles and yells.
"Michael Gordon Clifford!" she yells as she laughs. "You started it!" I laugh back.
We settle down, still chuckling at our stupidness.
We finally got closer to each other.
All we are doing is floating atop of the water.
It's calm and quiet. It's nice and beautiful out. The sky is turning pink and a mix of orange too.
"It's so pretty out" she says, looking up at the sky.
I nod in agreement. "These vibrant colors can be gone in an instance" she almost whispers.
"What does that mean?" I ask curiously. "Nothing" she shakes it off, coming closer to me.
When she's really close, I lean in. I don't know what I'm doing. I just lean in and attempt to kiss her.
