Luke thought it was such a great idea to take me out for some ice cream with his girlfriend. 7 months since Hanna died and he thinks I'm okay. The truth? I'm completely not okay. Every single day I sit in my room and drink my dad's alcohol and smoke. That's all I ever want to do, anyway. My days are numbered and Hanna's days aren't. Anymore, at least. But all I'm doing is taking off some days of my life.
Ice cream doesn't help. But in Luke's mind, it's all sunshine and rainbows and unicorns. Since ever he's met May, everything's different. He started to know the difference between concealer and foundation. Before, he didn't care at all. He doesn't play video games anymore. Now, he'd rather watch The Notebook with her. To me, all of this is disgusting. I never let Hanna change me. At least not in those ways.
Yes, I have to admit that I am getting better. That's only because I need to get by in life. My house is crappy and there's nobody helping me to pay for bills. A month ago, I started working at a McDonald's, a Dunkin' Donuts AND a Starbucks. Handling three jobs isn't easy.
The door of the car opened, which broke me from my thoughts. "Hey, Luke wants to know what kind of ice cream you want" May beamed. "Uh, cookie dough please" I said quietly. She probably didn't hear me. But to my surprise, she did. "Cone or cup?" she asked with a wide smile on her face. "C-Cup" I stuttered. She nodded her head and scurried off back to Luke. I watched from the car as she hugged him from behind him and then kissed him when he turned around. They laughed and kissed again. I'm watching how happy they are, which makes me even more sad than I am already. That was Hanna and I. Not anymore, I guess. Then, May tripped on some rock when she went to walk forward because the line moved up. She and Luke laughed and surprisingly, so did I. I haven't laughed in 7 months. And something stupid as a girl tripping made me laugh.
Some birds and families distracted me from Luke and May in line. Time passed and finally, they came back with my ice cream. "Sorry that took so long. The girls there were flirting with Luke and I got jealous, of course" May commented sternly when she hopped in the passenger seat. "The girl was hot" Luke whispered to me. He was loud enough that May heard him so she hit him in return. She looked back at me with a smile plastered on her face.
"Remind me not to get on her bad side again" Luke said to me. I nodded and took a bite from my ice cream. My predictions were right, it didn't help my sadness at all. But it didn't hurt to have it. Suddenly, Luke broke the silence. "I just got invited to a party guys" he gasped. "Congrats? Want a balloon?" May joked. Luke rolled his eyes but continued on talking. "You and May can come. It's tonight" he said. May furrowed her eyebrows. "And who's having this party?" she asked. "My twenty one year old cousin" he raised an eyebrow and forced a weird looking cocky smile. "And your point is...?" May asked. "So there is alcohol"
"I'm in" I said immediately. "Michael!" May gasped. "What? It's free alcohol" I shrugged and took another bite. I loved the idea of this kind of party. Free alcohol, probably free cigarettes too. May rolled her eyes but reluctantly gave in. "Fine. I'll go. But no getting handsy or making out with other girls" May said sternly to Luke. He nodded and raised his hand to his forehead to do a salute.

The party was pretty chill. It was dark, as expected. Bodies of teenagers and adults in their early twenties were dancing everywhere to the loud music coming from God knows where. The familiar scent of booze and cigaretts filled my nose, making me 10 times happier.
Although Luke looked like he was having as much fun as I was, May looked terrified. She looked terrified of the piercings and tattoos and the rock and roll music I liked. She clung to Luke's side as he looked for I'm guessing his cousin. They both drifted away from me as I went into the kitchen to grab a drink. There was some scotch and vodka, so I wanted to get creative and mix the two drinks. Even though it'd be extremely strong, I didn't care.
As I made my drink, a group of some guys came in laughing at something that happened. "Sup" one of them said to me. I nodded in their direction before dipping my head back and swallowing the intoxicating drink. I winced at how strong it was. Stronger than I expected it to be. "What's that?" another asked. "Scotch and vodka" I say before taking another sip.
"Is it good?" another asked. "Pretty good" I shrugged and shoved a hand in my pocket. My fingers wrapped around a picture I had of Hanna and I. I brought it with me everywhere I went. I watched as all of the three guys poured the two liquids together. Then all at once, they took a swing. All three of them winced but cheered afterwards. "Nice choice" one exclaimed.
I laughed and then headed out into the living room. There, I saw Luke and May dancing together to some pop song. On the other side of the small living room, I could see some girl dancing slightly, watching me. A smirk plastered on her face and a red solo cup in a hand. She ruffled her hair with one hand.
Before I knew it, I was making out with that same girl in some room after having three shots and four glasses of that drink I made up. I was so drunk I barely knew what was happening. Although, I did know somewhat of what I was doing. I was pretty sure she was twenty something and didn't know I was only 18.
Suddenly, my mind was pulling me away. I sat up straight on the bed and looked around the room while the girl consistently giggled and pecked my jaw. Then there she was. Standing in the corner, coming closer to me with every little step.
"What are you doing, Michael?" she asked. "Hanna? What?" I asked confusingly. "You're making out with some girl you don't even know" she chuckled as she leaned back on a drawer. "I do know her!" I lied. "Yeah? Then what's her name?" she stood up straight and folded her arms over her chest. My mind went blank. I knew she told me her name but I was too drunk to remember. "Exactly" she said cockily.
"I don't care what you think, Hanna. You left me. This is your fault" I snapped. The girl on top of me stopped and asked what was wrong. I ignored her and continued to speak to this apparition or something of Hanna. "Really? You're going to be rude to her like that? Answer her. Tell her that you're trying to have a conversation with your dead ex. Maybe then the slut can leave" Hanna scowled. "Shut up, Hanna!" I closed my eyes and covered my ears with my hands.
When I opened my eyes again, Hanna was gone. It was just the girl and I now. "I-I have to go" I said quickly and left the room. I ran down the stairs, past the living room where Luke and May were still in. I ditched them and ran home. Twenty minutes later, I arrived to my house. I ran up the stairs like I was being chased. Locked my door, opened my window and got ready to jump.
I couldn't handle this anymore. Everything...I couldn't handle it. Simply because I am a coward that doesn't want to face his own problems.
