I was almost finished cleaning the house when three light knocks erupted from the front door. Sighing, I dropped the broom and ran to the other side of the house to open it in time. Wiping my hands on my dirty joggers, I opened the door. I expected Luke, or Ashton, or even maybe Calum. The one person I least expected was my own mother to be standing on the other side of the door. "M-Mom?" I stuttered. My jaw was probably reaching the floor by now. Anger, happiness, even nervousness took over my mind. I didn't know how to feel about this. "Michael" she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around my neck. I found myself not hugging her back nor doing anything.
Then all of a sudden, I knew exactly how I felt. Angry. Upset. Frustration. Everything but happy that she's finally back. Of course I knew how I should feel, but I just didn't feel that way. "Get off of me" I demanded, and she took a few steps back. "What's wrong?" her eyes started to water. "You left! That's what's wrong!" I yelled, walking backwards but bumped into the wall.
"Mikey, I'm sorry. I had to leave!" she yelled back with pleading eyes. "You could have brought me with you! But no! You left to be happy and left me here suffering! When I needed you after every time he beat me up, you weren't there. When Hanna died, where were you? Oh, that's right. Not there!" I stormed towards the vase of flowers and knocked it down. It shattered into a million peices. "Michael, I had to get out of there! This isn't the first time this happened. Before you were born, he drank so much! He never stopped, he almost killed you and I when I was pregnant with you! Up to the point when you were born, he stopped. Finally, he stopped. He got help. Now that he has gotten back to this, I couldn't take in anymore" she crossed her arms over her chest and let her tears fall.
"Why didn't you take me with you?" I asked with a stern tone. "Because I thought that if he had alone time with you, he would realize what he was doing and stop" she wiped her tears. "He didn't change. At all" I sat down on the couch. "He thought I told you to leave. He beat me up in the middle of school, Mom. You left and he got even more pissed" I found myself starting to cry too.
She opened her mouth to say something but closed it. She repeated that until I spoke up. "Since you left me before, you should just leave. Actually, no. Leave. Like, right now" I stammered through my tears. "Fine. If it'll make you happy, then I'll leave for your sake" she strolled towards the door. "I haven't been happy since you left" I whispered under my breath.
My mom sighed and turned back to me. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry about Hanna and I'm sorry for not being there for you" I opened the door for her. "You forgot one more apology. You should be sorry for leaving" I slammed the door in her face.
Tears filled my eyes as anger filled my mind. It took over me. My hands itched to be holding a bottle of liquor. My body was shaking to just hold one cigarette between my lips. "You know, it's not hard to tell what you want. I've known you for so long, I know you. Smoking is bad for you. And alcohol" that all too familiar voice spoke. "Leave me alone. You don't know anything" I lied. "Yes, I do" she snapped.
"Why do you even bother talking to me?" I sat down on the couch across from the chair she was sitting on. "Because I love you" she shrugged like it was the most normal thing. "Then why did you cheat on me?" I asked. She laughed. She laughed in my face like it was the most funniest thing ever. "Why are you laughing? You cheated on me" I said bluntly. "I didn't cheat on you" she continued to laugh. "Who's baby are you carrying? Oh yeah, CALUM'S" I rolled my eyes. "He seriously didn't tell you? That bas-" I cut her off. "What was he supposed to tell me?"
A loud bang was heard from upstairs. When I looked back down, Hanna was gone. I had to find her, she has to tell me. "Hanna?!" I yelled throughout the house, until I ended up in my room. I heard sobs from outside. "Hanna?" I peeked my head outside. "I'm up here" I heard her whisper. She was on the roof. Hanna was always this dare devil, I should have known she would be on the roof.
I climbed out, changing positions of my feet so I don't slip and fall. "Why are you up here?" I ask, out of breath. "Calum-" she started. I furrowed my eyebrows at her as I sit down beside her. "Calum is a liar and a jerk" she said quietly. "What did he do, Hanna" she nuzzled her head in her knees. "At first it was just something to..get back at you. I thought that if I did that, it would be like pay back to you on some level. We made out at the most. Then Calum got clingy and desperate" she started to cry. I didn't want to pressure her so I didn't say anything further.
"He raped me, Michael" and with a blink of an eye, she was gone.
"Hanna!" I screamed, on repeat. "Hanna! Hanna! Hanna!" no answer. Like before, my mind welled with anger. I couldn't take anything anymore. Hanna's dead, my mom left me, my dad beat me, my best friend betrayed me, and Luke probably doesn't care anymore. Everybody is leaving me. One by one. Why shouldn't I just end my pain and suffering? Why can't I be the one to leave them? I stood up, edging closer and closer towards the edge. The stars were out and shining, it was a chilly night but just right. Finally, my feet reached the end. I was just about to fall, to end it all when a voice screamed at me. "Stop!"
I whipped around quickly. "Why should I?" I snapped. Taken aback from my outburst, she stepped back. "Because you have so much to look forward to. I don't want you to end up like me. Dead" she inched towards me again. "Just go, Hanna. Leave me alone" I waved her off but she ignored it. "No. Michael. You just tried to kill yourself! Please don't do this!" she exclaimed. "Hanna" I warned. "Michael" she said in the same tone. "I love you, Michael. Dead or not. I shouldn't have told you what Calum did but you needed to know. Luke cares about you, Ashton cares about you, and believe it or not but Calum cares about you too" she sniffled.
"Don't do anything"
So I didn't.
