Xavier's POV

   Josh and Jake.

Their names starting with the same letter was just a coincidence considering how much they looked alike. They aren't related but they are best friends. They have been since before I found them. That's right, found them.

When I found them I was on my first patrol. I was terrified. Terrified that someone would get hurt. Terrified that I would mess up. Terrified that Father would be disappointed in me.

I was just about to turn and restart my rounds when I smelt a strange smell. Two smells actually and they were both mixed with the smell of mud. The scent of blood also lingered in the air. It was strong, too strong.

Without thinking I rushed to where the smell came from. When I arrived I saw a boy laying against a tree. He was battered and bruised. He had multiple cuts running up and down his chest, arms, and legs. His eyes were glued shut. He was unconscious.

Before I even got the chance to mind link someone I was knocked to the side, the wind leaving my lungs. I was too terrified to fight back,it was only my first patrol. The boy had dark brown hair that was covered in mud. His eyes, which were light brown, held anger within them. He looked to be my age so the anger shocked me. What teenager had so much anger within them?

Quickly gaining back my mind that was pushed down by fear I pushed him off of me. He went flying away from me but he managed to land in a crouched position. My eyes went to the boy who was passed out, wondering if the boy in front of me did this to him.

I tried to walk towards the unconscious  boy but the other boy growled at me. He quickly walked towards him, picking up the unconscious boy's limp form in his arms.

"Who are you?" His gaze snapped up to meet mine and I repeated my question, "Who are you?"

"Jake." He replied and then his gaze went back to the boy in his arms. I took a step closer and he growled. He slapped the boy's cheek lightly and said some words that I made out as, "Wake up, please. Please."

"I can get him some help." His eyes snapped up to mine.

"And why should I trust you? How do I not know you're going to hurt him?" I put my hands up in surrender.

"Because I have no reason too." He looked off in thought for a moment before nodding grimly.

I walked into the kitchen to see Jake, who was waking around looking for food. I coughed and he turned around, nodding in  acknowledgment when he saw me.

"I need to talk to you about the other day." His eyebrows furrowed in confusion at my words. "When you got hurt." Anger flashed through his eyes. I know he hated weakness.

"It won't happen again. That's all you will need to know Xavier." I growl and he rolls his eyes.

"I am the Alpha of this pack. As the Alpha I need my best worrier, which is you in case you didn't realize is you, to actually be the best worrier. You haven't gotten hurt since you came to this pack. So why did you get hurt the other day, especially with such a minor situation. I have seen you take on five rogues by yourself. What happened?"

"It doesn't matter." I growled and pushed him towards the counter, getting frustrated.

"Unless you wish to be suspended, as third in command and from the pack fighters, I suggest you tell me what the hell happened."
