It was finally Saturday, and Connor drove to Aubrey's apartment. Although he was more than ten minutes early, he did not care because he was taking Aubrey on a date.
Connor exited his car and studied the old rusted building; it broke his heart that Aubrey would never live in such a deteriorating building. He knew he had to do something to help her, but knowing Aubrey, she was not accepting favors.
Connor walked up to Aubrey's apartment and knocked on her door; within seconds, Aubrey unlocked the door, and he was staring at her. Connor was stunned; she was wearing a long, flowing pink dress with different colors of floral designs. Connor suddenly felt like he was twenty-three again, with all the butterflies in his stomach as he was about to take her on their first date.
"Hey Connor, you're early."
"Oh yes. I was just, well, I— I could not wait to see you, that's all," Connor told Aubrey, even though he was lost for words to describe how beautiful she looked.
"Well, I hope you don't mind waiting outside. I'll be back in a sec," Aubrey told him, and without waiting for him, she spun around and shut the door behind her. As Aubrey entered her apartment, she exhaled; she had no choice but to make Connor wait longer for her.
She was a proud woman, but allowing Connor to walk into her little house and see its bad state was embarrassing for her. Connor grew up in luxury, and if he saw the inside of her apartment, he would likely never return.
But is that different from what you want? She asked herself as she struggled to come up with the answer.
Connor watched as Aubrey walked into her apartment, and when she appeared, she had a cute boy hiding behind her back. The little boy was probably shy, and Connor could understand; he was perhaps not used to being around strangers.
"Connor, this is my son CJ, my boy. Could you please step away from mommy so that Uncle Connor could see you properly" Aubrey, in the sweetest voice, told her son? Connor stood and marveled at how Aubrey had matured; even though once upon a time, he imagined having children with her, seeing her being a mother made him love her more.
The little boy stepped away from his mother so Connor could see him properly, and Connor was stunned.
What is going on here? He thought to himself. Connor studied the little, and little CJ was different. He was not darkly skinned like his mother as he was mixed-raced; neither did he have his mother's brown eyes, but rather, he had silver-grey eyes and high cheekbones like Connor.
A strange yet funny idea played in the back of Connors' mind, but he decided to push it away; there was a very slim chance that his thinking could be true.
It cannot be Connor; Aubrey would have told you by now if he were your son. He thought to himself and let that assumption pass. He knew that Aubrey was an honest woman, and lying was not something that she did. Therefore, CJ must be another man's child and not his own.
"Hey CJ, my name's Connor, and I am your mum's friend" Connor got down to the little boy's level and introduced himself. The smile on CJ's face was one Connor would never forget, and in some way, it reminded him of himself when he was young.
"Hey, my name's also Connor!" CJ squealed with excitement.
"Well, that's great! Can I be your friend?" Connor asked CJ, whose face lit up with excitement as he nodded in agreement.
"Are you two ready to go?" Connor asked the pair.
"Yes!" Both mother and son spoke in unison.
