She was from District 7.
Myself, from District 11.
Somehow, we had both been selected for the 19th annual hunger games.
I'm not quite sure how we became allies, but we found each other huddled in an icy cave.
The 19th hunger games landscape was brutal. A thick blanket of white snow covered every inch, making it extremely difficult to remain inconspicuous because of the footprints we left behind, which i tried to fill as much as possible. If we weren't going to die from homicide, we were probably going to die from frostbite.
But we sat there in the bitter cold, cuddled together in a dark cave, hoping for the best.
"Wha-a-t's y-your n-na-ame?" she asked between her chattering teeth.
She was colder than I was.
"Camila," I rubbed her back, "and yours, gorgeous?" I watched as a darker shade of pink crept up onto her already rosy cheeks.
"L-laur-r-ren."
My gaze was torn from her eyes when I heard the pathetic ding of a parachute descending from the sky.
I crept over to the edge of the cave and plucked the parachute out of the snow, bringing it back inside so Lauren and I could open it together.
I pulled her back into my side, prying off the lid of the box, taking out two pairs of gloves, a beanie and a thick sleeping bag. I pulled one pair of gloves onto my own hands, sliding the thicker pair onto hers.
I took the beanie and pulled it onto her head, making sure I covered her ears before laying the sleeping bag on the floor of the cave which was, thankfully, not quite as cold as the ground outside. I held the top open so Lauren could crawl into it.
I followed in her suite, wrapping my arms around her cold body immediately.
The limited room of the sleeping bag pressed our bodies even closer together.
She nuzzled her head in my neck, her breath sending chills down my spine, but not the bad kind.
I ran my fingers up and down her back, coaxing her to sleep, her green eyes slowly concealed behind lids.
I lay awake, vowing to protect the princess that slept beside me.
I kissed her forehead and concentrated on the sounds around me.
I watched as the sun rose, illuminating the sky. I felt the beauty beside me stir, the cutest purr-like noises emitting from her throat.
Somehow, she made me forget the brutal situation presented before me, captivating me with her green eyes.
She rubbed her eyes and pressed her lips to my neck, nipping lightly.
I pulled back.
"Wooah there, tiger," I giggled and unzipped the sleeping back, standing up and holding out my hand for her to take and pull herself up.
She slipped on a patch of ice and fell into me, grabbing my arms for support.
"It's a wonder how you're still alive," I laughed half heartedly.
She just stood there, seeping into my soul with her green eyes.
She leaned closer and closer.
Before I knew it, our lips were brushing against each other's in a warm kiss.
Her hand was placed tenderly on my cheek, mine placed on her hips.
We pulled back for air.
I laughed as her cheeks flushed.
"I-I-" she stammered.
I pecked her lips softly.
We both jumped when we heard a cannon go off.
She grimaced and bit her lip.
"I'm gonna go get some food. You stay put, princess." I kissed her forehead and ventured out to try and find game.
I had just finished spearing my second fish when I hear the ominous boom of a firing cannon. I almost dropped my spear.
Lauren.
I sprinted back to the cave, not bothering covering up my footprints.
"Lauren!" I screamed as I made my way closer to the cave.
I breathed a sigh of relief when I found the Cuban leaned against the wall with her legs pulled to her body.
"Thank god you're okay. How about some breakfast?" I held up the spear of fish.
We had managed to build a small, inconspicuous fire inside the cave using matches that had been sent to Lauren a few days before.
We ate in silence, appreciating the warmth of the fire before it was gone.
We stayed in our small cave, praying that we could remain undetected. Maybe if we wait it out, we could end up the last two and... fuck there can only be one victor. We'll cross that bridge when- if we get to it.
We made small talk all day.
My favorite thing is when her eyes light up when she speaks of her family. Her brother and sister. How they always spend the holidays together.
We talked about small things like favorite foods. But also bigger things like the passing of loved ones.
I was surprised to see that the sun was setting.
We had actually managed to talk the day away.
We zipped up in the sleeping bag, Lauren tucked into my side, and we both fell asleep quickly.
I woke up to a cold body.
I was startled by the lack of breath warming my neck, the lack of lips against it, teeth nipping at it playfully.
My eyes shot open almost immediately following.
"Lauren?!" I shot up.
I pressed two of my fingers against her pulse, not sure what I was expecting.
Tears burned in my eyes, my hands started shaking.
I jumped when I heard a cannon fire, confirming my biggest fear.
I buried my head in her chest and sobbed, grabbing her face and kissing her cold lips.
"YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO DIE!" I punched the ground beneath me, ignoring the searing pain that shot up my arm, the sharp pain of a fist being punched through my heart being much more concerning at the moment.
"You weren't supposed to die," I whispered.
I watched as her body was lifted.
And that was the end.
No more green eyes.
No more raspy voice.
No more warmth sleeping next to me.
No more lips pressed to my neck.
No more Lauren.
