Chapter 36 - Orange flames and black smoke

"Let her go," Alfie commanded William, who was still standing too close to me to my liking.

"I've come this far," he muttered. He then quickly grabbed me and pressed the knife against my throat. Alfie's eyes met mine and I saw how scared he was. I was so relieved that they were both here. The two of them actually stood a chance against William. But then out of nowhere, William moved the knife from my throat to my stomach and stabbed.

I screamed out and fell to the floor, blood was flooding out of me fast. I couldn't see what happened next, but I could feel the hotness of flames, coming nearer to me.

"Safe Zoe," I heard Alfie yell. I then heard footsteps running on the stairs. Alfie was going to get William. No, he had to stay with me.

"You're going to be okay," Thomas assured me, when he bent down, next to me. The room was filling with smoke which made me cough. It was now that I noticed that Thomas had bandages and stuff with him. He was wrapping the bandages around my stomach to stop the blood. He helped me up on my feet, the flames were so close to us and the stairs. I didn't know if we would make it out alive.

I supported my weight on his body to move. I had some hope that we would do it, until Thomas started coughing so much, he had to let go of me and I fell again. I could block my fall with my arms and started crawling up the stairs. I looked behind me and saw him still standing there, coughing, his eyes tearing up from the deadly smoke.

"Thomas!" I shouted and started coughing too. He stumbled on the stairs and helped me up again. Covering his mouth with one hand and supporting me with the other. We reached the trapdoor and crawled out of it, coughing our lungs out. This room was also very smoky. But through the thick smoke I could see a body on the floor. Alfie.

"Alfie," I whispered and crawled to his body. He was on the floor, unconscious, in a little pool of blood. "Alfie. Alfie," I repeated, hoping he would wake up, but he didn't. Soon I was pulled away by Thomas. He had to drag me out of the shed, because I wanted to be with Alfie. He led me away from the shed and placed me down on the ground.

"Alfie," I said again. "Alfie."

"I'm going to get him, Zoe," Thomas said through a cough. "I promise if you promise to stay here."

I nodded. My vision was getting a little blurry but I pretended to be okay. He had to safe Alfie. If he knew I was not okay, he would stay with me.

"Take this," Thomas added while pressing a knife in my hands. "I don't know where William is. He might come back. Use it if you have to."

I nodded again because I was afraid that if I would speak, he'd notice that I was not alright at all. He left very soon afterwards. I took a deep breath and looked at the sky. It was beautifully blue today. There was hardly a cloud to see. What a contrast with the nightmare I was in.

When I touched my stomach I could still feel blood coming out of it. Not as fast as it did before, but I could feel the energy and life drain out of my body.

"You little bitch," I suddenly heard the voice of my enemy. My heart stopped. He had come back to finish me off. I hid the knife I had in the sleeve of my sweater so he wouldn't know I had this. "Sit up," he told me.

I did as I was told and sat up. William was sitting down next to me. "Now look at that little shed. Do you see all the smoke?"

I stared at the smoking shed. It had turned ash black.

"Your friends are not going to make it," he smiled happily. He was lying. He was trying to make me feel bad, but they were going to make it. They had to. "They're going to die in there and do you know whose fault that is?"

I bit my lip nervously. He was right about that. If they died, it would be because of me. Something tickled in my throat and I started coughing again. I covered my mouth with my hand and I saw some blood in my hand. In movies, that was never a good sign.

"Aw, are you dying?" William sneered. I gave him an evil look. He stroked my cheek which made me flinch. "Should I give you a little hand?" He got out his knife and pointed it at me. I had to act quick now, or I'd be dead. I got out the knife from my sleeve and planted it in his leg. He screamed out and stabbed his knife in my leg as well which made me scream too. Tears were forming in my eyes when the horrible pain spread through my entire leg.

"So you wanted to kill me again," he asked me, looking furious. He took the knife out of my leg and blood flooded out of it fast. He was going to stab again, but in the distance I heard sirens coming closer. William looked scared. He got to his feet and limped to his car to speed of only a minute later.

Exhausted I laid back down on the ground, covering the wound on my leg with both my hands to stop the bleeding. Tears were streaming down my face. I was alive and the emergency services were on their way. I was going to be okay. But were Alfie and Thomas going to be okay as well. I rolled over on my stomach and tried to crawl back to the shed. I had to know if they were okay.

I was getting pretty close to the shed when I heard a loud bang and the shed was gone. Something inside the shed must've exploded. Ash black thick smoke rose to the sky and orange flames were burning my eyes.

"No!" I screamed out. I didn't see Thomas or Alfie anywhere. What if they were still in there? Then they'd just died. The thought crept in my mind and made my heart ache. Suddenly some paramedics arrived at the place I was at. "There are two people there!" I shouted pointing at the place where once stood a shed. But they didn't seem to listen to me. They put an oxygen mask on my face so I couldn't talk anymore. Alfie, Thomas, please be alright, I prayed. Alfie. Thomas. Alfie. Alfie. Thomas. Alfie. Please.
