Chapter 39 - All he had"I look horrible, don't I?" he said and yes, I had to agree with him. He was lying underneath a blanket but I could clearly see burn wounds on his left arm that was sticking out. But that wasn't the worst part. The left side of his face was covered with bandages, which made me guess that he had burn wounds there as well.
"It's alright," I lied. I could only imagine what his face looked like without the bandages. I walked over to him and carefully sat down on the bed.
"You used to be a better liar," he half smiled at me.
"How did it happen?" I asked him.
"Alfie was unconscious when I got to him and he was bleeding a lot," he started. The image of Alfie in a pool of blood popped in my thoughts. I shivered remembering it. "So I dragged him out of the shed, but when I wanted to stop the bleeding I realised that all my CPR stuff were still in the shed, so I went back. Guess I shouldn't have done that."
"You wanted to save him," I said more to myself than to him. It touched me that he would do that. He didn't care about Alfie. The only reason he put himself in danger was me.
"I promised," he said confirming what I thought. It was silent for a few minutes. I couldn't keep my mind away from Alfie. Was he back in his room already so I could see him?
"Marry him," Thomas suddenly said which made my head pop up.
"What did you say?" I asked, thinking I might have misunderstood. Did he really just tell me to marry Alfie?
"I've had a crush on you since the first day I met you. I fell in love with you only a week later. I'm still in love with you and I don't think I'll ever not be in love with you," he started. My stomach flipped upside down. I probably had misunderstood. Maybe he didn't say marry him but marry me?
"I'm going to be very honest now. I've tried to win your heart since day one. Even when you thought I wasn't trying anymore, I was. But now I'm done chasing. You don't belong with me but with Alfie. So I say, marry him. Because I don't think you'll find someone who's better for you," he said with a little smile.
"Thomas, I-" There were so many things I wanted to say to him right now, but I didn't know where to start. The things he just told me were so honest and showed me how much he trusted me and cared for me.
"You know some day, you meet someone who will start a fire in you that can't die. But they're not always the person we spend our lives with. You're that person to me," he said, a weak smile on his face.
"You'll find someone who'll start an explosion in you," I said trying to cheer him up. I still didn't really understand what he saw in me. I wasn't that special.
"An explosion?" he repeated, raising the eyebrow that wasn't bandaged. "That's a cruel thing to say right now, Zoe," he laughed.
"Oh my god," I laughed awkwardly realising that indeed, it was a little cruel. Why was I so bad with words? "Then you'll find someone who'll start a bigger fire."
"That's really sweet, but honestly, who'd want me now?" he sighed. "My gorgeous face is gone. That was basically all I had."
"Are you kidding me?" I half shouted. "There's so much more to you."
"Really?" he snorted.
"Really," I said. "You're intelligent, confident and you stick to your promises. You're not as bad as you think you are."
"There's so much you don't know," he whispered, looking at his burnt arm. "I'm horrible."
"No, you're not," I defended him.
"I've made mistakes," he said, still trying to convince me that he was a terrible human being.
"Everybody makes mistakes," I killed his previous argument. He sighed but didn't react anymore.
"Helena's pregnant," he said, his face turned sad.
"I know," I said which made him finally look at me. "Helena told me. She also told me that you ran away when she told you." I raised an eyebrow, trying to read his expression.
"I just can't do it," he shook his head. "I can't be a dad."
"Yes, you fucking can," I snapped. Me swearing made him smile a little, but it soon faded again.
"You should go and rest again, Zoe," he mumbled, changing the subject.
"So should you," I smiled while getting off the bed. I turned towards the door and was making my way out of the room when he said something.
"I called you. The day she told me. I wanted you to come over because I knew you'd say that."
I turned around and looked at him. "You called me?"
"Yeah," he nodded. "I already figured you didn't remember. It was the same day you had the car crash."
Memories came flashing back in my mind. A car that tried to get me off the road and eventually succeeded. A hand, that was put on my shoulder. William's hand.
"There's one question I still have," I mumbled fast, so I wasn't quite sure if he had understood. "Nobody has told me yet and I don't think they'd tell me the truth if I asked anyone. So I'm asking you." He looked at me curiously, tilting his head a little to the right.
"Have they caught him?" I asked. I was feeling scared. So scared that he might still be out there to get me. My stomach flipped when I saw Thomas shaking his head.
"I'm sorry."
