Chapter 31 - The visit that went wrong

As predicted the police didn't find the fact that I remembered a voice enough to release Thomas. I spent the rest of the days at home, feeling defeated. Alfie had taken such good care of me. It touched me that after all, he still supported what I was doing.

Today Megan and I were going to Tanya and William. I was extremely nervous to see the both of them. They probably hated me. She picked me up right after lunch and in no time we had arrived at the apartment building Tanya lived in.

"Are you alright?" Megan asked me when she saw how nervous I acted.

"I'm just not sure if this is a good idea," I told her.

"Tanya told me they're both fine with it," she assured me. "Don't worry."

I nodded unsurely, but got out of the car anyway. We took the elevator to the second floor and knocked on the door of the apartment. For a brief moment I wished that nobody would come to open the door.

"Hello," Tanya said cheerfully when she opened the door. She looked very good in comparison to the last time I saw her. She had a round tummy and was wearing a lovely blue pregnancy dress with green flowers on. "Come in."

I followed Megan inside. The apartment was pretty small and I couldn't think Tanya would raise a child in here. In the right corner of the room I spotted some baby toys so I figured that actually was her plan.

William was sitting on the small sofa and stood up when he saw us. He politely shook my hand. I whimpered as he had a quite firm grip, but I managed to cover it up with a smile. He smiled back at me. It seemed like he really didn't mind my presence.

We all sat down on the sofa and a few chairs that were placed in front of the sofa. I sat in the couch with Megan and awkwardly scanned the place. I could see that Megan was doing the same. William nervously sat on the chair next to Tanya, who was looking down at her tummy.

"Would you want anything to drink?" Tanya asked to break the silence.

"Just some water, please," Megan said.

"Same," I nodded, biting my lip nervously. I knew it would be weird to see them again, but not that it would be this weird and awkward. Even Megan didn't really know what to say.

Tanya soon came back with two glasses of water and handed it to the both of us. As she gave mine, she spilled a little water on my pants. "I'm so sorry!"

"That's alright," I smiled sheepishly, wiping a bit of drops from my brown pants. I felt more and more at unease by the second. I wouldn't say I was feeling anxious yet, but I wasn't very far from it.

"We actually came to apologize," Megan started the talk. I couldn't read William's expression, but Tanya looked very kind, just as I remembered her.

"What happened is in the past," she said, giving us a weak smile. "How are Jim and Thomas?"

Megan and I exchanged quick looks. Were we going to tell her about Thomas? I wouldn't, but I didn't know what Megan was thinking.

"They're alright," she answered. "They're also still trying to process what happened a few months ago."

"It was so weird, wasn't it?" Tanya said. "It's funny how I don't remember anything of before the simulation. They said Will and I got in together."

"And do you believe that?" Megan asked, raising her eye brows.

"Why wouldn't we?" she answered. I stared at her in disbelief. Who would actually agree to do that? My whole life has changed because of it, but not in a good way.

"Never mind," Megan said. She probably realised that it was better to not talk about it.

We talked a little more for the next hour. Or well, Megan and Tanya were talking. I was feeling very uncomfortable so I was staring inside the now empty glass I was holding. William was extremely quiet and the whole time I had the feeling that he was watching me. The times I did look up from the glass, I caught him quickly turning his gaze away.

"I can't wait until the baby is here," I heard Tanya say. "Will is going to be an uncle," she giggled.

William smiled at this. "Can you imagine me as an uncle?" he laughed.

Can you imagine what I could do if I didn't have to hide?

The sentence floated in my mind when William spoke. But why? I didn't know until William looked me straight in the eyes. It was as if the world had stopped and all the air was sucked out of the room. His voice. That was the voice that I remembered from the car crash. It was him. He hadn't forgiven me at all. No, he was more the type to get revenge.

I stared at him with wide eyes as my heart beat accelerated. It was him who had made my life a living hell. He murdered my guinea pigs, he broke my relationship, he framed Thomas and he almost killed me. I had to get away from this place. I had to go to the police. I hadn't realised how long I had been staring at him, but at the look on his face, I had been doing it too long. He knew that I knew.

A/N: Aaaaaaaah D: anyone who was expecting THIS? Hope you enjoyed although it's a little shorter than usual xx
