Chapter 2 (Keeley POV)

“Keeley. K, wake up” Will shook me softly.

“What” I grumbled.

“They’re announcing the winners now” he said.

“Wait like now!” I exclaimed.

“No, in a couple minutes, but wait a second…” he leaned down and kissed my hair.

“Good luck K” he said softly.

“Thanks Will” I smiled, then strode up to where I left my bag.

I slipped on a pair of denim cutoffs and grabbed my aviators. I had a good feeling about this competition, if I won; I could get a spot on the Championship Tour, or CT’s. Maybe I could just surf all my life, I definitely could do that.

I found Tegan and Logan and Will waiting for me by the judges table. The podium stood empty in front of me as I nervously stared at the judges. Tegan gripped my hand and I smiled weakly at her. After what seemed like years a judge stood up and walked slowly up to the microphone. He cleared his throat and then began to speak.

“There were many good surfers out there today. Some had their on days; some had their off days…” I sighed.

“Do they always have to give a monologue?” I whispered to Will.

He snickered and replied, “Of course, it makes them feel like they’re not washed up.” I laughed at that one.

“…And now we’re going to announce places ten through four, who were good, but not podium worthy. Number ten, Kandance Swartz, Number nine, Stiles Bradley, Number eight….”

My heard beat increased with each name the judge called. Each name got closer to my ultimate goal, winning. My palms were slick with nervous sweat and my heart was racing. Tegan squeezed my hand.

“Now for your top three, all three of these surfers were incredible out there today, and it was hard to choose a winner. The prizes are for third, a pair of authentic ray-bans, for second, a pair of ray-bans and $100 vans girt card and the winner will get the ray-bans, the vans cash, and a $500 visa card. Now without anymore stalling, your third place winner is Kale Aragin!”

I saw the blonde boy’s face light up. I’ve known Kale for years, we were good friends during freshman year, until we dated, and now we’re just friends. I still surf with him every-so-often. He smiled as the judge presented him with a bronze medal and a pair of teal ray-bans. Kale stepped onto the third place platform proudly, beaming to the crowd.

“Second place is Oliver King!” I didn’t recognize that name.

“ ‘Scuse me” a thick Australian accent said from behind me, and I turned to face a black haired, blue eyed boy.

“Sorry” I said and moved out of his way. He smiled at me, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Will glare at him.

“Stop it” I elbowed him in the side. Oliver accepted his medal, and winked at me from the podium.

“Now the winner of the 2011 Ray-Ban Classic surf competition is…” I sent a silent prayer to whoever was listening during the pause that the judge added for dramatic measure. Will grabbed the hand that Tegan wasn’t holding and squeezed it slightly.

“Keeley Hollingsworth!” the judge yelled.

“Yes!” I exclaimed and hugged Tegan, then Will.

“Congrats girl!” Tegan said in my ear.

“Knew you were gunna win” Logan smiled. “Now go and get your medal” he playfully shoved me forward.
