Chapter 26 (Keeley)

I woke up with Wes’ arms around my body. I didn’t fall asleep in his arms, but I woke up in them. A knock came from the door and I shifted a little in Wes’ arms. We were alone in a room, none of the other guys wanted to listen to him moan in pain all night. Wes groaned as I moved to get up.

“God, almost forgot I was in pain.”

I chuckled and kissed him on the forehead, “Sorry but there’s someone at the door.”

“Isn’t that why we got our own room, to stay away from them?” he complained.

“Yea, well, you didn’t take too much of an advantage of it last night” I teased. It was true; almost as soon as we got into our room, Wes passed out. I didn’t even get a kiss.

“Hey now… I was injured” he said.

“Well maybe you’ll just have to make up for it” I winked, and then strutted over to the door.

“You’re killing me Keels” he groaned, but not the groan of pain I’d heard before. I opened the thin, wooden door to reveal Mars, looking incredibly stressed.

“Hey Keeley, come out here, and close the door behind you” he said.

“Oh, alright” I said and quickly shut the door behind me.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“This” Mars held out a crinkled piece of paper with red-brown stains placed sparingly across the sheet. The handwriting was scratchy and hard to read, but I managed.

“Hunters, we have one doppelganger. If the other is not in our hands by morning, consider this one dead.”

“This came with it” Mars held up a small silver necklace with an L on it. I’d gotten Layton that necklace freshmen year; she never took it off.

“Oh god” I said, stumbling into the wall next to me.

“Whoa, Keeley, you ok?” Mars asked, concerned.

“No, what the fuck is that?” I asked.

“It’s a ransom note. The daemons want you, and Layton.”

“I got that, but why?”

“They think you’re a doppelganger” Mars said.

“What the hell is a doppelganger?” I asked, getting angry. Those bastards have my sisters and the want me too? Hell no! If they think I’m just going to up and march to them then, they’re in for a rude awakening.

“A doppelganger is two people who look exactly alike…”

“Like twins?” I interrupted.

“Yea, like twins, but from different generations, one is usually supernatural and can live for a long time.”

“So what does this have to do with me and Lay?”

“See, daemons have this legend that there are two doppelgangers that will restore them back to gods and will cure they’re evil hearts. The doppelgangers are described as tanned skinned, dark haired beauties. They must’ve thought you and Layton were the doppelgangers in their legend.”

“And if they don’t have both of us by morning, they’ll kill Layton” I said solemnly.

“They’re bluffing Keeley, they wouldn’t, not when they think they have a chance at becoming gods again” Mars said.

“How do you know that?”

“I just do, I’ve been a hunter a long time.”

“I can't trust that.”

“What’s that mean?”

“It means I have to go.”

“No, Keeley, you can't go.”

“I have to save my sister Mars.”

“You know they’ll probably kill you when they find out you're not a doppelganger.”

“Yes but…”

“You’re going to do that to Layton, to Wes?”

“Don’t bring Wes into this” I snapped.

“Oh hell I’m going to bring Wes into this! You dying would crush him! He’s taken a lot of shit in his life, but he can't take this.”

“Mars, I have to go. There’s no other choice.”

“There’s always another choice. Yours is to go and die, or stay and live.”

I cringed at the sound of that. “It’s my sister, I’ll do anything for her” I said, on the verge of tears.

“Fine, you wanna fucking die? You wanna fucking do this to Wes? Then go ahead and kill yourself bitch, see if I care” Mars yelled, then turned on his heel and stormed away.

“Fuck you Mars” I yelled after him as salty tears began to pour down my cheeks. I slipped back into the room with Wes, and slid to the ground.

“Keels? Keeley what’s wrong?” he asked from the bed. I shook my head as the drops fell from my cheeks and fell to the dirty floor.

“Keeley please, I can't stand to see you like this” Wes begged, affection shining out of his oceanic eyes. Love, I’d never feel real love in my life because I was set to die. I slowly got up and moved over to the bad. I would never give myself to everyone either. I wasn’t a virgin, but I’d lost it drunk at a party, so I didn’t count it. Unless…

“Come here Keels, tell me what’s got you crying” Wes held out his arms to me. I leaned in and smashed my lips to his, kissing him hard. Wes seemed shocked for a minute, and then responded to my desperate kiss. My hands traveled downwards and he grabbed my wrists and broke the kiss.

“No, Keeley, not right not” he said, voice husky.

“Please?” I begged. “Please Wes?” I kissed him again, but he only held it for a few short seconds.

“No, I don’t want our first time to be because Mars yelled at you and you’re upset. I want it to be romantic, because you deserve it” Wes said. I would never feel what it was like to completely trust someone by giving myself to them. Just like I’d never go to the CT’s or graduate from college or get married. All because of these damn daemons.

“Don’t you want me?” I whimpered, new tears falling.

“Is that even a question? Of course I want you. You’re perfect in every physical way possible, absolutely beautiful. You in yourself is something I’d cherish forever if I got the chance. So don’t ever this I don’t want you, I just don’t wanna rush this, we’ve got all the time in the world” Wes said, almost sounding offended.

“Oh Wes” I cried into his shirt as he held me. Little did he know we had the exact opposite of all the time in the world, we had a few short hours. Soon, Keeley Hollingsworth would be no more than an empty shell of what I used to be.
