Chapter 16 (Keeley POV)
Again we all piled into Yolanda. The occasion this time, we were hunting down a coven of vampires, obviously not too intelligent ones, in a beach town. What vampire in the right mind settles in a sunny, bright beach town when, according to Wes, they sizzle like bacon. I snickered at the memory.
“Stop moving” Wes grumbled and tightened his arm around my shoulders. He was still mostly asleep, but the other hunters were wide awake. I felt Wes completely relax again, and he was out cold.
“You know, Wes isn’t like that with anybody else” Mars whispered.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Wes, well, most of the time I’ve known him he’s been temperamental and kind of crazy, but he’s never been protective, until he met you. Now, he’s so protective of you, it’s kinda strange really” he replied.
“What? Wes being protective is weird?”
“No, Wes having actual feelings is weird.”
“What?”
“As long as he’s been around, Wes has always been guarded; I think that’s what made him so bi-polar. For the first year I swear the guy was a ruthless, paranormal-monster-killing-machine” Mars chuckled.
“Mars, what happened to him? It’s obvious it was something bad, otherwise you guys would talk about it” I asked. “I can't say. It’s not my story to tell.”
I sighed, “Do you think he’ll ever tell me?”
“Sooner than you think” Mars smiled. I glanced over at Wes, who was still asleep next to me. A small piece of hair had fallen over his face. I softly brushed it back, a faint smile playing across my lips.
An hour or so later we arrived at the town. It was more commercial that the last, with high rises polluting the seaward sky. I rolled my eyes at a family of tourists with matching t-shirts and smiling faces. My family didn’t do vacations, more like, my dad, Layton, and I didn’t do vacations. My mom ran off when I was in fifth grade, leaving my dad heartbroken, and Layton and I alone. Dad now spent most of his time on business trips, so he probably wouldn’t even notice Layton and I were missing.
“You ready to kick some vamp ass?” Wes asked me, pulling me out of my thoughts.
”Hell yea” I smiled.
“Ok Keels, I want you to stick behind me. I don’t wanna see you get bitten or hurt” he said seriously, eyes traveling down to the scar on my leg from the drakii.
“Don’t worry Wes, I’ll be fine” I said, more confident than I felt. Truthfully, the idea of facing a blood-thirsty, fanged, murder-machine scared me. I mean who wouldn’t be… My thoughts were cut off by a hand slipping over mine. I smiled gratefully at Wes.
“I promise I won't let anything hurt you Keels, ever” he said, ocean blue eyes staring into mine.
“Thanks.”
“Ok guys, get your gear, load up on wood” Milo pulled Yolanda to a stop. Mars slid the metal door open and we all jumped onto the pavement outside. Wes, still holding my hand, pulled me around to the back.
“Here, put this on.” He handed me a brown belt with a stake, a bottle of water, and another, smaller stake. It fit loosely around my hips, settling on my jean shorts. I had on a kinda tight black tank top and black boots.
Wes pulled out a belt for himself that held two full wooden stakes, a bottle of water, and a small stake. He had on a plane black t-shirt, tan cargo shorts, and the belt made him look dangerous, and damn it was a good look for him.
