Chapter 27 (Keeley POV)
As the sun set that night, my tears had long since dried. I was numb to the idea of death, and since Wes denied me my last wish, I was completely numb to everything. I way lying in bed with Wes, enjoying my last moments of life wrapped in his arms. I wondered what it’d feel like, and I hoped Wes would be ok. He had to be. He had Stiles, and Milo and Mars to help him get through this. Then, he’d pick up and move on with his life and marry and have kids with some other girl and be happy. That’s what I wanted for him. He kissed my forehead and I snuggled into his chest one last time. Then I pulled out of his tanned, muscular arms.
“I’m gunna run out and get you some Advil and bandages” I lied, and kissed his forehead before moving towards the door.
“Without money?” Wes choked.
“Oh, right” I said quietly and grabbed a couple bills from the table. My fingers gripped the cold, metal doorknob when Wes’ voice broke the air again.
“Keels, I know you too well, you don’t have to lie to me.”
I froze and squeezed the doorknob tighter. “Yes, I do” I whispered, knowing he’d hear.
“Don’t do this Keels, there’s another way.”
“Another way to what?” I played dumb.
“Save your sister. These walls are thin, I heard every word you and Mars exchanged. I just figured you wouldn’t… You don’t have to go through with this. There’s always another way” Wes said and I heard the shuffling of sheets and his footsteps drew closer. Oh no, please don’t come over. I had to do this I had to.
“No there’s not! Don’t you see that?” I said desperately.
“What I see is you giving up, and taking the easy way out” he said. He was right behind me, I could feel his usually calming presence, but now it made me sick to my stomach.
“I have to save her Wes, she’s my sister.” Tears began to fall from my eyes and pour down my cheeks again.
“I get it, I honestly do, but taking yourself away from her, and me, and everyone who cares about you isn’t the way to do it.” I felt my heart clench at his words, it hurt, but I wouldn’t let my resolve falter; I was going to die for Layton.
“Wes I have to go” my voice broke as I spoke. I felt the tips of Wes’ fingers on my arm.
“Please… please Keels, don’t go” he whispered brokenly.
“But…”
“Please stay with me, I can't lose you” Wes sounded absolutely broken. As much as I wanted to turn around and try to ease his pain, I knew the minute I saw Wes’ face, I was a goner; so I stayed staring at the deep brown of the wooden door.
“Wes, stop making this harder than it is, please, I have to go” I was sobbing at this point.
“No, I’ll do anything, give you anything” Wes pleaded, voice cracking and I could tell it was thick with tears.
“If you want a romantic date, I’ll give you a picnic on the beach, candles and all. If you want a fancy vacation, I’ll take you anywhere you wanna go, Europe, Hawaii, California. If you want sex, hell I’ll give you the best sex in the world. If you want love, I’ll love you until my last heartbeat, and even then after” he begged. I could hear the tears and the sheer pain him his normally strong voice.
“Wes… I can't” I mumbled, still refusing to look at him.
“Please. You want clothes? I’ll take you to Rodeo Drive, and pay for even the most expensive necklace. Wanna go home? I’ll drive you. Wanna spend a day on the boardwalk? I’ll hold you on every ride and never let go.” Wes’ fingers on my arm finally got to me, along with his words. Tears poured out of my eyes like a hurricane as I fell to my knees, still gripping the doorknob.
